That's Fit: We all want to know Kim's absolute favorite lower-body moves, the ones she does at home and the ones she mastered on the set.
Jennifer Galardi: Kim loves backward lunges and the balancing "T" where she would lift one leg, balance on the other and lower her body until it was in a "T" formation. Some of her favorite body-sculpting moves are also the most popular in many other videos and in fitness classes across the country, the lunge and the traditional squat.
TF: We've done squats for 20 years, ad nauseum. How do you make squats fashionable and fun again?
JG: Great question! We always add a little "twist'" or cardio element to ensure the heart rate stays elevated, and Kim always works out to maximize her time and her muscles. So, we tend to add weights, tempo changes and directional elements.
TF: What the heck is a directional element in a squat?
JG: For example, with the squats, we'd step out to the right side to squat and return to center, then balance on one leg and incorporate a biceps curl or an overhead press while we were squatting. With her lunges, we went multi-directional to ensure she had to really engage her core and deepest belly muscles to keep her balance. We would lunge front then back and then to the side on the same leg to constantly keep her body challenged.
TF: Did you guys pig out to sustain your energy? You were working out like crazy.
JG: It's always challenging to eat well on a production set, but one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants was near the studio, and I introduced Kim to some great-tasting raw and macrobiotic foods, like Scarlett Quinoa (grains made with beets to color the dish a beautiful red). We also ate lots of steamed kale and some sushi. You really can't practice the "starvation" diet method that many models and actresses employ when you're shooting energetic exercise DVDs. You've got to sustain all that stamina for the cameras. Kim and I were doing multiple takes of these workouts so it's crucial to give your body the energy it needs from healthy and vibrant foods. Of course, dark chocolate is always a great snack option!
TF: OK, so I personally love Kim's DVDs, like Ultimate Butt Body Sculpt
JG: Our routines are doable for anyone, anywhere. I created these workouts specifically with Kim in mind because she travels extensively and requires moves that are portable and space efficient. One of her favorites is with a chair, and anyone can do this anytime. She places a chair behind her a few feet away, and she squats down until her butt barely touches, hovers for three seconds, then stands up and repeats it. It's so simple but so effective, and it ensures proper form and that you lift up through the legs. Anyone can perform my simple, body-toning do-anywhere moves.
