New England Clam Chowder - How Many Calories?

How Many Calories Posted on Aug 27th 2009 11:00AM by Bev Sklar
You don't necessarily have to spend a grueling 24-hour shift reeling in lobster baskets to justify a warm bowl of New England clam chowder. No doubt crews on those Lobster Wars boats sailing out of New England resemble exhausted zombies after a day burning calories on the high seas.

But still, we all know cream-based soups are ripe in fat and calories, and New England clam chowder is a far cry from a clear broth soup. You're going to need to move your body or eat lightly to avoid this soup's backlash on your bod. How many calories in a bowl of irresistible clam chowder?

A bowl of hot New England clam chowder over at the Red Lobster is going to cost you 480 calories and 33 grams of fat (19 saturated), and that's before requesting extra oyster crackers or tearing apart a sourdough bread bowl you often find surrounding a steamy ladle at restaurants. Protein is a respectable 20 grams, though.

To keep your figure, a bowl of this soup is best paired with a light salad, not a high-calorie entree. Or spend a day throwing stink bombs at Japanese whalers in the southern ocean with the controversial Sea Shepherd Conservation Society featured on Animal Planet's Whale Wars. Wait, that won't work -- they're vegan pirates. You'll have to work out with the lobster fishermen instead.
