Blueberries Help Banish Belly Fat

You've probably heard me rant and rave about blueberries. I eat them about six days a week, I gave them a "star" in my book "The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth," and I've spoken at length about their high antioxidant content, their low sugar content and their ability to boost memory (in experiments conducted by Jim Joseph at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging).
Well, get ready for some hot news: Blueberries may also help banish belly fat.
A new study by researcher E. Mitchell Seymour of the University of Michigan shows that rats who ate a diet high in blueberries lost abdominal fat -- the kind linked to increased waist size and increased risk for diabetes and heart disease. This happened even when the rats ate a high-fat diet. As an extra added bonus, the blueberry-eating rats also had improved glucose control (meaning their blood sugar was more stable).
The researchers suggest that blueberries, with their high antioxidant content, might somehow alter the way the body stores and processes sugar -- great news for those at risk for both heart disease and diabetes. "Our findings in regard to blueberries show the naturally occurring chemicals they contain, such as anthocyanins, show promise in mitigating these health conditions," said researcher Dr. Steven Bolling of the University of Michigan. The study was presented at the national conference Experimental Biology 2009 in New Orleans.
I find blueberries one of the easiest foods to incorporate into your diet. In season or not, you can always get them frozen, and I like to eat them right out of the freezer (mixed with frozen cherries). I put some FAGE 2 percent yogurt on them, sprinkle with some slivered almonds, flaked unsweetened coconut and some probiotic powder and have them as a nightly "dessert." It's the ultimate "anti-aging" treat!

Parmesan
Drop that rubbery low-fat cheese and pick up the real stuff. Women who had one serving of whole milk or cheese daily were less likely to gain weight over time, a study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds. Low-fat dairy fans didn't experience the same benefit. Whole dairy may have more conjugated linoleic acid, which might help your body burn fat. "Parmesan is so flavorful, it's easy to stick to one serving," Buchanan says.
Eat more: "Grate Parmesan over roasted vegetables," Buchanan offers. Or snack on a 1-ounce portion with an apple or a pear.
Eggs
Dig into eggs, yolks and all: They won't harm your heart, but they can help you trim inches. Women on a low-calorie diet who ate an egg with toast and jelly each morning lost twice as many pounds as those who had a bagel breakfast with the same number of calories but no eggs, a study from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge reports. "Egg protein is filling, so you eat less later in the day," says David Grotto, R.D., author of 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life (Bantam).
Eat more: Omelettes and scrambles are obvious choices, but if you can't cook before work, bake a frittata on Sunday; chill it and nuke slices for up to a week.
Steak
Beef has a rep as a diet buster, but eating it may help you peel off pounds. In a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, women on a diet that included red meat lost more weight than those eating equal calories but little beef. "The protein in steak helps you retain muscle mass during weight loss," says study author Manny Noakes, Ph.D. Try to consume local organic beef; it's healthier for you and the environment.
Eat more: Grill or broil a 4-ounce serving of top round or sirloin; slice thinly to top a salad, or mix with veggies for fajitas.
Chiles
One reason to spice up your meals: You'll crank up your metabolism. "A compound in chiles called capsaicin has a thermogenic effect, meaning it causes the body to burn extra calories for 20 minutes after you eat the chiles," Zuckerbrot explains. Plus, "you can't gulp down spicy food," she adds. "Eating slowly gives your brain time to register that your stomach is full, so you won't overeat."
Eat more: Stuff chiles with cooked quinoa and marinara sauce, then roast them. To mellow a chile's heat, grill it until it's almost black, peel off charred skin and puree the flesh, Krieger says. Add the puree to pasta sauces for a one-alarm kick. Or stir red pepper flakes into any dish you enjoy.
Kale
Long sidelined as a lowly garnish, this green belongs center stage on your plate. One raw, chopped cup contains 34 calories and about 1.3 grams of fiber, as well as a hearty helping of iron and calcium. But kale's earthy flavor might take some getting used to. Spinach, another nutrient powerhouse, is a milder-tasting option.
Eat more: Mix chopped, raw kale into cooked black beans, says Jennifer Iserloh, founder of Skinny Chef Culinary Ventures in New York City. Or slice kale into thin strips, sauté it with vegetable broth and top with orange slices. Make it a meal by tossing the mix with quinoa.
Oats
"Oatmeal has the highest satiety ranking of any food," Grotto says. "Unlike many other carbohydrates, oats -- even the instant kind -- digest slowly, so they have little impact on your blood sugar." All oats are healthful, but the steel-cut and rolled varieties (which are minimally processed) have up to 5 grams of fiber per serving, making them the most filling choice. Instant oats contain 3 to 4 grams per serving.
Eat more: "Instead of using breadcrumbs, add oats to meat loaf -- about 1 cup for a recipe that serves eight," Iserloh recommends. Or try her recipe for turkey and oatmeal meatballs.
Lentils
Lentils are a bona fide belly flattener. "They're high in protein and soluble fiber, two nutrients that stabilize blood sugar levels," says Tanya Zuckerbrot, R.D., author of The F-Factor Diet (Putnam Adult). "Eating them helps prevent insulin spikes that cause your body to create excess fat, especially in the abdominal area."
Eat more: There are many varieties of lentils, but red and yellow cook fastest (in about 15 to 20 minutes). Add cooked lentils to pasta sauce for a heartier dish, Zuckerbrot suggests. "Their mild flavor blends right in, and because they're high in protein, you can skip meat altogether."
Goji berries
These chewy, tart berries have a hunger-curbing edge over other fruit: 18 amino acids, which make them a surprising source of protein, says chef Sarah Krieger, R.D., spokeswoman in St. Petersburg, Florida, for the American Dietetic Association. (They also have more beta carotene than carrots.) Snack on them mid-afternoon to stay satisfied until dinner. The calorie cost? Only 35 per tablespoon.
Eat more: Mix 1/4 cup of the dried berries (from health food stores) with 1/4 cup raisins and 1/4 cup walnuts for a nourishing trail mix. Or for dessert, pour 1/4 cup boiling water into a bowl with 2 tbsp. dried berries; let sit 10 minutes. Drain, then spoon over 1/2 cup low-fat vanilla frozen yogurt.
Wild salmon
Not only do fish fats keep your heart healthy, they shrink your waist, too. "Omega-3 fatty acids improve insulin sensitivity -- which helps build muscle and decrease belly fat," Grotto explains. And the more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns. Opt for wild salmon; it may contain fewer pollutants.
Eat more: You don't need to do much to enhance salmon's taste, says Sidra Forman, a chef and writer in Washington, D.C. "Simple is best. Season a fillet with salt and pepper, then cook it in a hot pan with 2 tsp, oil for one to three minutes on each side."

I love bluberries, and eat them many times a week, if not everyday. Even when I am thin, I have a belly. Your genes dish out what they do. Be happy you are breathing and live with it!

You know the thing i hate the most is people saying that there is a cure for fat. I've got a 100% way to lose weight.... Get off of your fat butt, eat right and quit being lazy and guess what if you order right now it's free. Do something every day not 2 days a week or 3 days or even 5 days. Enjoy your life and enjoy mother earth.

Well Chris, you sound absolutely like a skinny know-it-all, and Ill bet you have an answer for EVERYTHING ! Im going to try this new idea and see what happens. I love blueberries ( which arent easy to get here in the winter ), but Ill just have to look harder. :)

Chris-you make a point but you are obviously young as you don't think of everything. I've run for almost 30 years. I work out 6 or 7 days a week for 1-4+ hours a day in my health club. The result-at age 47 my knees are torn up the joints give me 9-10 level pain at time and I feel beat up most of the time. Shoulders torn since age 14 from baseball. I can't burn all those calories every day anymore-at least until I can get operated on-but with no job (I got off my butt and have two master's degrees) I can't afford the health insurance. Yes I can eat a bit better but I'm in a situation where I don't have the time and money to cook well. The body ages as one gets older so exercise and diet aren't an end all. Both genetics and medications can also affect weight.

This article isnt about the food making you burn more calories its about the berries affecting the way your body stores the food and controls your sugar. And since when does time or money have to be a factor in eating healthy? You already admitted you could eat better so once again Chris has not said anything untrue here. People just dont want to be responsible for their own well being and look for excuses

I've lost over 100 lbs! On average I eat fresh or frozen blueberries 3-5 times a week. I work out 3 - 4 times a week and I have also changed my way of eating by my approach to what I eat, how often I eat and how many meals I eat a day. I'm sure it wasn't JUST the blueberries but maybe they helped!

There no one diet pill or plan that will help you lose weight. Just proper eating and exercising. Now I am nit promotion and one diet plan but I went through menopause and gained weight. I put my self on the Alli plan, learned to eat better, gain control, confidence and learned to motivate myself. Not saying that it will be an end all to end alls but I went from 155 to 145 in 2 weeks and my knees and hip thank me. Just learn to eat well and exercise.

George, Chris's comments were rude and immature -- fat b.? Lazy?! How is this anything but flames, and why do you defend it? Esp. the second person *you* criticized for referencing time and money made valid points about his life (not yours, natch) -- and yet you feel it's okay to bash others. Save it for someone who actually posted appropriately.

I work out at least 3 times a week, which is extreamly hard since I am a single mother of 2 children, I am also a nurse and work 12 hr shifts, I cook every day, and if I have some reason I cant cook my meals come from Wendy's where I get a plain baked potato and salad or chili and and ice water (h2o is my drink 95% of the time). I have great colestorol, sugar numbers, and bp yet I am still over weight, and loosing is VERY hard even though I have tried every diet I could find. My problem, and the problem with so many people is that I have a Thyroid problem, this makes it SOOOOO hard to loose any real weight. I take such offence with people like Chris because they think they know so much when in reality they dont know squat. Being over weight is just about being lazy, there are so many other factors. My nephew is 1 year old and in the 95% in hight and weight, so I guess he needs to get off his fat rear and work out too???? NO!!! Genitics also play a huge part in the way people are built, and until someone takes that into account and designs a fitness plan, not a weight loss plan, for people with all kinds of issues there is really not much that can be done. That is whay you hear people say "I have tried every diet there is and I still cant loose weight", they are not using the correct plan for their body and medical and genitic factors. So, Chris, get the facts BEFORE you speak, I am very happy that you have all of the card stacked in your favor so that you can be thin, but for those who dont have that luxuary please watch what you say because you dont know as much as you think you do.
