Think you'd like to try the a low GI diet? Here are some general tips to get you started.

  • Eat either whole grains or products made with 100 percent whole grains.
  • Work beans, legumes and lentils into your diet.
  • Incorporate plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Here's a list of "free" foods, or foods that rank very low on the glycemic index.
  • Familiarize yourself with low GI-friendly foods.
  • If a high GI food can't be avoided, pair it with a low GI food to keep blood sugar levels down.
  • The popular South Beach Diet is based on the glycemic index, if you're looking for a more structured eating plan.
