Domino's Bread Bowl Pasta - Diet Enemy, but Recession Friendly?
Categories: Nutrition & Supplements
We've mentioned a time or two that, often, the foods that seem to give you the most bang for your buck also give your waistline an extra bulge. Not only are lots of junk foods cheap, but when people are stressed, they don't generally turn to fruits and veggies. Nope, they want warm, gooey desserts, soft bread and carbs, carbs, carbs.
Domino's knows this, and they're catering to that demand with a new dish -- Bread Bowl Pasta. Starting at just $5.99, you can choose Pasta Primavera, Chicken Carbonara, Chicken Alfredo, Italian Sausage Marinara or Three-Cheese Mac n' Cheese served in a big, edible bowl of bread. Or, of course, you can build your own and add up to three meat or veggie toppings (including bacon, salami and Philly steak). If you feel like lightening things up a bit, you can order the pasta without the bread (and knock a dollar off the price in the process).
I'm not going to lie -- when I first saw these, I thought they looked like a heart attack on a plate (wait, do you eat bread bowls on plates?). I was sure the calorie count had to be around 1,500 -- I mean, it's creamy, cheesy, meaty pasta, surrounded by a bunch of bread! But, I was totally wrong.
Edit: Domino's later provided us an additional nutrition chart that verified my initial assumption -- these ARE as bad as you think. Find out more here.
In fact, each Pasta Bread Bowl is considered two servings (whether you share it or eat it all in one sitting is your choice), and the calories for both servings range from 670-740, with 24-28 grams of fat per Pasta Bread Bowl (meaning your individual serving is 335-370 calories). That's no health food, for sure, but still, it's way better than what I would have guessed. (And yes, this information was verified by Domino's PR.)
Maybe you're thinking, "Sure, but they're probably tiny." At least, that's what I thought. However, each bread bowl is stretched to about eight inches in width, so they're pretty substantial, and definitely sized to share.
So, what do you think? Would you try a Pasta Bread Bowl?

Where did you get your nutritional info on that? It seemed too good to be true, so I googled...
http://www.yumyucky.com/yumyucky/2009/04/feed-your-fat-cells-dominos-pasta-bread-bowls-.html
Looks like the info provided straight from Domino's says that each bowl is 2 servings. If that's the case then you were right about it being a 1500 cal bomb.

If you look at the info at http://www.yumyucky.com/All%20Pasta%20Combined.pdf, you'll see that the pasta alone is around 700 calories. But if you add the breadbowl it goes up to 1500. So don't eat the bowl, I guess.

I would try it, sure. But it also would not be a regular part of my daily diet. I try to avoid restaurant food, especially fast food, as much as possible, as it is tremendously bad for you (Very high in saturated fats and sodium, usually). I think the recession aspect only serves as an excuse for not preparing your own food. Sure, it might take some work to research foods to determine how good they are for you. Too busy? I've tried these things and they're actually pretty good considering the price and all. The amount of carbs from the bread + pasta though, is something to watch out for.

It's interesting/sad to see how people always comb these comment-able types of blogs or articles so that they can formulate an "opinion" that just leads up to the true motive - spam for their own product.

Wow - I am not finding any nutrition info on their website (thanks to the giant ad it was easy to click through to their website) about this product...
According to the USDA's nutrition database, http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/
One DOMINO'S 14" Cheese Pizza, Classic Hand-Tossed Crust pizza is 2290 calories in its entirety, and you're saying it's 8 inches wide and clearly much taller than a pizza, my food geometry says there is no way "your individual serving is 335-370 calories"
I'd like to see the nutrition label on this one...

I'm not gonna lie - I ate one of these this weekend and it was fantastic. I could only eat a little more than half of it but it was so good. Maybe not worth the calories, but still sooooo good.

I'm sorry, but i just saw the commercial for these heinous things, and there is no way that 700 calories is for the entire bowl and pasta. NO WAY! I think they gave you the information for one serving, so double that and that's what one bread bowl has. Sorry, too good to be true. I think your initial instinct was right on the 1500 calorie deal!

So let me get this straight...if it is just the pasta it is one thing, but if you put the pasta into a bread bowl the saturated fat goes down? The trans-fats go down? And you add a large piece of bread which looks as if it has oil or butter on the crust and the calories go up by less than the usual caloric count of a single slice of bread?
I can't believe this....

Here is the "official" nutritional information for this latest atrocity of American cuisine. http://www.yumyucky.com/All%20Pasta%20Combined.pdf
The info in this article was way off. They must've meant that for one serving, however each bowl is two servings.

This is so gross. It's like eating a sandwich made out of an entire loaf of bread - filled with another loaf of bread, and cheese. Seriously, do they make a profit off of diabetes?

You health nuts may live longer, but you live miserable calorie counting lives eating Tofu and drinking Soy Juice (its not milk, since they'res no soy tit)
"Oh! I' dlove to eat that slice of bread, but it will totally push me over my carb/sugar/fat count for the day, guess I'll just lick this lemon wedge."
I'll die at 70-80 and enjoy a nice foot long Philly Cheesesteak and laugh at you all. You enjoy living to 100+ crapping your pants and forgetting who your kids are.
