The Skinny - Does Your Body Resist Feeling Full?

Categories: Nutrition & Supplements

The SkinnyBread. It's my downfall. When I have a piece of that yummy carb-loaded goodness, it's not long before I'm craving another ... and another. But it's not necessarily a weakness in willpower that causes those cravings; certain foods can just add fuel to the fire that is your appetite.

In his new book "The Skinny," Dr. Louis J. Aronne, Director of the Comprehensive Weight Loss Program, explains how food can have a physiological effect. Aronne maintains that what you eat can have a big effect on your appetite.

Certain foods -- like my nemesis, bread, -- can create something Aronne calls "fullness resistance." I don't know about you, but -- while I've never heard that term before -- it's concept I'm all too familiar with. In "The Skinny," Aronne gives an example of a naturally skinny person who, when eating, knows exactly when they're full and can easily step away from the table. But, for others, it's just not that easy.

Aronne writes, "The delayed or nonexistent sensation of fullness stems from a condition I call fullness resistance. The hormones and chemicals that are supposed to induce fullness no longer work effectively." If you answer yes to one or more of the following questions, you may have fullness resistance:

  • Have you gained 20 or more pounds since age 20?
  • Do you feel even hungrier after you start eating than on an empty stomach?
  • Do you feel like eating as soon as you get home from eating out?
  • Have you been diagnosed with insulin resistance, pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes?

To help your body feel properly full, Aronne recommends revising what you eat. Steer away from refined foods and look for lean protein, vegetables and fiber-rich foods, because these foods can leave you feeling more satisfied.
