Lettuce Blasts Through Weight Plateaus
Categories: Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
Salad is my all-time favorite fat burner. Whenever my diet takes a turn for the processed worst, I toss a salad. Yesterday it was baby spinach with julienned veggies for a guaranteed pound lighter in the morning. Whenever I'm stuck at a weight plateau -- my body loves this one number right now -- green, leafy salads jumpstart the scale in the right direction.Green thumb or not, lettuce is a no brainer first crop to plant this spring. Lettuce varieties love cooler weather -- spring or fall is an ideal time to sprinkle a row of lettuce seeds. Looseleaf is easy to grow, while head lettuce takes longer. Containers aren't just for herbs -- you can even container lettuce on your back deck and snip offf a small side salad as needed.
Don't miss Every Nutrient for the immense health benefits of lettuce, and these three tips to salad-blast through your weight plateau. My favorite is dipping the tines of your fork in dressing before stabbing a forkful. I tried this two nights ago and not only did each bite taste great, my salad didn't risk an overpour of ranch.

I just wanted to say that I've been a lot more successful with losing weight and eating healthier once I stopped eating iceberg lettuce. To me, iceberg is very tasteless and boring by itself. Salads made with iceberg lettuce got me used to choking down food that I didn't enjoy, which led to all sorts of mindless eating and bad habits. Romaine isn't so bad, and spinach is even better.
Remember that salad is no longer healthy if you have to add lots of dressing, croutons, etc. to choke it down. A "spoonful of sugar" might "help the medicine go down", but doing that can also create different health problems. Most pre-made dressings in general are bad for you. Try tossing green leaves in a mixture of herbs/spices and olive oil instead. Substituting unsalted almonds for croutons will give you the crunchy texture plus some protein and better nutrients in general.
