Avoid a Hairy Situation With the Right Headband

Fit Beauty Posted on Apr 20th 2009 10:00AM by Kristen Seymour

When I'm working out, I don't want any distractions. My shoelaces have to be tied with equal tightness, my shirt and shorts can't be creeping up, and for the love of Pete, don't even talk about hair getting in my eyes. It's entirely possible that nothing infuriates me more than a chunk of hair that Just. Won't. Stay. Back.

As you probably guessed, I'm a firm believer in using the right accessories to keep the hair out of my face, and you're probably thinking that those nice stretchy headbands -- you know, the one that all the girls are wearing -- would be a great solution. And you'd be right except for one little problem. The shape of my head is not conducive to wearing those trendy little headbands. They either pop off (and boy, do those things fly) at the most inopportune moments, or I spend my whole workout adjusting and readjusting the band. (This has been the case since I was a child -- no Madonna-esque lacy bow headbands for me, I'm sad to report.)

But I'm an optimist, and I don't give up, so when I read the Fit Bottomed Girls' post on headbands (see! I'm not alone in my headband drama!), I was super excited. I was already familiar with the Goody Stay Put Headbands (the thin, flat version actually works quite well, but I still can't use the thick flat ones or the tiny round ones -- head to your local drugstore and take a peek; you'll see exactly what I'm talking about), but I'd never heard of Bondi Bands. But now I have, and I'm really, really happy about it.

Kristen Seymour bondi bandBondi Bands are thin in the back but really wide on top, and they're loosely stretchy, so they stay fitted to my melon without sliding off. Also, they're cute -- there are plenty of plain colors that wick away sweat (I tried out the black on a 5k run with great success), but there are also funky prints and patterns available for every day wear. Additionally, there are loads of headbands with symbols and sayings for men and women -- if you have an interest, there's a good bet they make a headband for that.

This is perfect for me with my chin length hair -- I can either wear just the headband or use it to hold the hair that doesn't fit in a ponytail. I wish I'd known about these when I coached volleyball, because I think the girls would have loved them. Also, with bangs being so popular, a wide headband like this could be a fit fashionista's best friend.

Oh, and to top it off, they're just $8 each. I know, it's a little more than you pay for that pack of three at Walgreens, but if the headbands in that pack of three fly off your noggin the way they do off of mine, you'll agree that $8 is a small price to pay for a headband that works and looks good.
