Fit Beauties Need a Good Foundation

Not everyone is concerned about looking pretty while working out, but you know what? Nobody's going to judge you for wanting to cover acne or other imperfections before you hit the gym.

But here's the thing -- you don't want to wear just any foundation when you're working up a sweat. Some makeup can actually create more acne. Dermatologist-recommended cosmetics brand Cover FX offers products that give good coverage (in a wide variety of shades) and, at the same time, they're good for your skin -- even when you sweat.

I had a chance to try out Mineral FX Pure Mineral Foundation with SPF 15 ($37 at Sephora). While I don't really have problem skin (I mean, sure, a zit pops up here and there, but in general, it's pretty clear), I don't always have a chance to remove makeup before I hit the gym or go for a run. I was really curious to see if, for one thing, I would like the coverage of the loose powder mineral makeup (I've always been a pressed powder girl), and second, how it would stand up to a workout. So, I took it out for a test run. Literally.

The application was great, although I had to use my own makeup brush (from reading reviews, I gathered that it used to come with a sponge, but no longer does). I loved the finish, too -- it was light, but really evened out my skin tone. Once I looked all made up and pretty, I went for a run on a sunny, humid Florida afternoon.

mineral makeupI was afraid that there would be obvious differences in where I sweated and where I didn't, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that wasn't the case. Did I look fresh as a daisy? No -- I looked like I had gone for a run. But I didn't look like I'd sweated off half my makeup, which is a big plus if you ask me. And, it didn't cause any sort of skin irritation either.

One question this might raise is, "Why choose mineral makeup over more conventional types?" Well, there are a lot of claims made about mineral makeup, and even more opinions. Some experts say that mineral makeup is essentially just a marketing ploy, and that it contains the same things most makeup contains, just without fragrance and preservatives. And, in fact, some minerals are bad for your skin -- asbestos, anyone?

Other experts say that mineral makeup is better for your skin because it's free of common irritants like fragrance, binders, synthetic dyes and preservatives. In fact, dermatolgist Francesca Fusco said, "It's non-comedongenic, so it won't clog pores, and it's not going to aggravate an acne condition or cause a flare-up as easily as some traditional makeups can."

A big problem with mineral makeup is that there is no regulation -- as long as a product has some sort of mineral in it, it can claim to be a mineral makeup, so not all mineral makeups are equal. What it really comes down to is what you prefer -- if a liquid foundation gives you the look you love, great! If you prefer a pressed powder, that's fantastic. And, if you love the look a loose powder mineral makeup gives you (and many people feel it gives them flawless, natural-looking coverage), then that's the choice for you!

Now, to be clear, Cover FX isn't all mineral makeup -- that was just the product I chose. I would be really curious to see what kind of post-workout coverage some of their other products offer as well, since all of them are designed to be great for your skin.
