Christina Applegate - She Eats to Live, Trains Like an Athlete and Can't Afford Her Favorite Lunch

Categories: Celebrity Fitzness Report, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Nutrition & Supplements

Curious to know how celebrities squeeze fitness into their daily lives? Our fitness expert Fitz sits down with the stars and digs out their great and not-so-great methods for staying healthy.

Christina Applegate has grown up before our eyes and has truly evolved into a sophisticated, smart, driven woman who also happens to be one hell of a comedic actress. Her hit show "Samantha Who?" on ABC is in its second season, and Christina has had to split her focus between continuing to deliver hilarity on cue and recuperating from an aggressive battle with breast cancer. She's recovering from a double mastectomy and becoming the fit woman she's accustomed to being. Christina talked about her efforts to stay strong, the diet she can no longer afford and the torture she endures for gorgeous skin.

Fitz: Christina, you look the best I've ever seen. What have you been doing?

Christina: Thanks! I'm finally able to exercise (since my surgery). My recovery has been really long and slow but I've been gradually getting back in to it.

Fitz: What type do you do?

Christina: I've been running, spinning, dancing and taking boot camp classes. I really love to exercise.

Fitz: That doesn't sound very gentle at all! In fact, it sounds like a pretty hard-core workout schedule.

Christina: Yeah, I know. But I mainly have to stick with lower body exercises. I do yoga too.

Fitz: And what are your eating habits like?

Christina: I was strictly following a macrobiotic diet for while. I've sought out foods that serve the purpose of "helping and healing." I definitely seek out alkaline-loaded foods like kale.

Fitz: Are you still pursuing macrobiotics?

Christina: Not strictly. I was having it delivered to me, but I simply couldn't afford it anymore!

Fitz: Really? What's the price tag on a macrobiotic lunch delivery?

Christina: Trust me. It's really high. Too high! I just couldn't justify the expense anymore.

Fitz: Are you eating with cancer prevention in mind?

Christina: Absolutely -- I hope I'm doing that! I'm also just trying to balance my life and not be so regimented.

Fitz: When you slack a bit, what is your favorite not-so-healthy indulgence?

Christina: I love cheese. A good cheese pizza every now and then is wonderful.

Fitz: What's on your mp3 player?

Christina: Six thousand songs! I often listen to Jeff Buckley, Bright Eyes and The Beatles. I think I just like sad men.

Fitz: In Hollywood, you're privy to the best in fitness and skin care. What's the strangest thing you've ever tried?

Christina: Thermage. It's this laser heat thing that I've done for my skin, and the process is complete torture!

Fitz: Does it work?

Christina: Yes! I love it. It literally feels like an hour in hell, but it totally rejuvenates my skin and makes it look healthier.

Fitz: I was thinking back to the way you looked back when you starred in "Married with Children." Even though you're older ... you look so much better!

Christina: Back then I never stepped in a gym, I had great elasticity, and my body would respond if I exercised just twice. Things changed about three or four years ago. I have to be incredibly consistent with my workouts, and it takes at least a month to see any positive changes in my body.

Fitz: Lastly, you seem to have attained a really great level of fitness. What advice do you have for our readers?

Christina: Eat lots of kale! It's God's super-food!
