The Biggest Loser - Mega Sugar Buzz
Categories: Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Week 14 at "The Biggest Loser Couples" has slimmed down to eight finalists, but many of them haven't shaken the poor food habits that landed them a spot on the show. Sugar impulse control is a tough hurdle for all of us. Read on as The Godfather Ron confronts Filipe and Sione, alliance paranoia revs up and players run steps at The Rose Bowl to make up for one disastrous sugar Temptation.
Bad Blood -- Ron and son Mike are angry Filipe and Sione flipped their votes against Ron last week. Contestants (and producers) are dramatically serving Ron up as an Italian mafioso. He's smart and manipulative, but has a bum knee -- not exactly Don-like. Let's see if he gets what he wants -- that $250,000 prize for Mikey.

100-Tray Temptation -- As alliances fell last week, so did nearly everyone's common sense. This week's Temptation offered up 100 mystery trays that contained a serving of junk food or a pack of gum 'n cash or possibly one Golden Ticket for singular voting control at this week's elimination. In a frenzy for power, everyone except Kristin lost their heads and attacked the trays. If you picked the junk food, you had to eat it for another tray chance. Filipe near puked all his donuts and cupcakes, and Tara looked ill after her 4,000-plus calories. Laura scored the Golden Ticket. Beyond their disgust, trainers Jillian and Bob remind us to forget the games of life and focus primarily on what you can control -- yourself.
Why Do We Binge? -- Contestants binged at the Temptation because they were stressed out seeking Golden Ticket power. If I binge on sugary snacks, I'm usually stressing about something. I wish I'd naturally reach for a walk or run first, instead of salt or sugar. Next time you're upset and start prowling around the kitchen, think shoe leather. Then slip on your favorite pair and go for a walk. If I can drink a glass of water and wait just 15 minutes, my crave wave subsides. What works to halt your binges?
Jerry and Coleen Crash Subway -- Remember Policeman Jerry and his daughter Coleen from last season? Jillian's team enjoyed a surprise visit from this father/daughter duo during a field trip to Subway. Jerry not only lost and kept off a ton of weight, he did it on his own after early elimination. Whenever you question this show's effectiveness at combating morbid obesity, think of Jerry. Also, stick with lots of veggies on your Subway sandwich and stay away from added oil or mayo. Mustard and vinegar are a better choice, says Jillian.
Rose Bowl Step Class -- In one cool challenge, players had to run half the stadium steps at The Rose Bowl -- all 2,156 of them -- in the fastest time. Tara and Sione made the final, having to repeat their 2,156-step act in a showdown. Tara won, of course. If you want a fantastic workout, run the stairs at your local stadium. I used to stair-run the University of Florida's stadium regularly for guaranteed "Rocky" inspiration. I've stepped into The Rose Bowl, but never ran the stairs -- just held my trumpet and trembled with pre-game nerves as a member of the University of Iowa's Hawkeye Marching Band. Now marching The Parade of Roses ... that was a quads-of-steel calorie burner.
Don't-Miss-Trainer-Gems
- Bob says a tub of air-popped popcorn has around 200 calories, compared to the 850-900 calorie theatre tub. I've always wanted a hot air popcorn machine, light seasoning does wonders over a vat of oil. Orville's hot air popper is on my Mother's Day wish list.
- Jillian says kettlebells are a killer ballistic workout to build muscle, shed fat and keep it fun. Beginners can start with kettlebell swings for back and core, and the explosive clean and jerk for legs/shoulders.
Golden Ticket Laura held onto her power after an eight-pound loss, so when Helen and Sione fell below the yellow line this was a no-brainer. As Tara's main nemesis Sione departed the ranch, he claimed he'd be the next Tongan Brad Pitt. Beyond his hot self, I like Sione's gentle soul. Back home his wife is working out alongside him, he bought his kids the gift of sneakers and has departed his landscape business to be a personal trainer. He also got a great haircut. Speaking of makeovers, tune in next Tuesday for "The Biggest Loser" makeover event with fashion guru Tim Gunn. See you next week.
