Smoothies are a Dessert - Not a Gym Snack!

I cringe each time I pass the smoothie cafe at the gym. Since I've spent my professional life trying to help people figure out the right way to lose weight and become fit, the smoothie sensation -- which usually takes people far away from their physical goals -- drives me nuts. Consuming a smoothie packed with fresh produce and not much extra nonsense is fine if you choose it as a healthier alternative to dessert or an occasional meal replacement. It is not however, some sort of miracle weight loss potion one should indulge in after every workout. This video explains it all.

I find this explanation to be rather frustrating. What specifically about a smoothie is unhealthy? I know lots of people make smoothies for breakfast- soy milk or yogurt and fruit- that sounds pretty healthy to me. Is it just gym smoothies that are bad?

I think she's talking about those smoothie bars at fancy gyms were you can get all matter of ingredients, including ice cream! I have a smoothie every morning for breakfast, though mine is comprised only of fruits, water and nuts.
Good post Fitz. I think you could also say the same thing about energy bars and gatorade--use only during endurance activities, and even then in carefully measured quantities.
