Almonds - How Many Calories?

How Many Calories Posted on Mar 30th 2009 12:00PM by Martha Edwards

Determined to eat a healthier diet? Almonds are one food that experts will almost certainly recommend you factor into your daily eating regime. Why? Those tasty little nuts are nutritional powerhouses, offering protein, calcium, vitamin E and plenty of healthy fats. And they've been shown to decrease your levels of LDL (aka "bad") cholesterol, all while helping curb your appetite.

And if they're so healthy for you, they're probably good for your waistline too, right? What do you think?

How Many Calories ... in a Cup of Almonds?
256 calories373 (33.1%)
546 calories376 (33.4%)
778 calories223 (19.8%)
953 calories155 (13.8%)

The answer is 953 calories and -- GAH! -- 87 g of fat! However, to be fair, this is the calorie count for oil roasted salted almonds. A cup of plain almonds has around 546 calories and 47 g of fat. Still, that's a lot of calories -- proof that you can get too much of a good thing.

When you're eating almonds, stick to a small handful. Luckily, these delightful nuggets are so dense, that's probably all you'll need to curb your afternoon hunger, and if you overdo it, research shows that almonds don't usually make you fat. If you can't just stick to a few? Consider adding almonds to your diet in other ways -- by sprinkling them on salads, for instance, or sauteing them in a bit of olive oil with your veggies.

However you choose to eat almonds, just keep one thing in mind: Having them covered in milk chocolate means they're not considered a health food. Sorry.
