Megan Mullally's Strange Fitness Addiction

Posted on Mar 27th 2009 12:00PM by Fitz K.

Curious to know how celebrities squeeze fitness into their daily lives? Our fitness expert Fitz sits down with the stars and digs out their great and not-so-great methods for staying healthy.

Megan Mullally is costarring in ABC's new sitcom "In the Motherhood" airing Thursdays at 8 p.m. and is totally fulfilling the role as a MILF. At 50 years old, she sounds happier in her skin than she's ever been, and you'll be amazed by her response to reaching this milestone. During this interview, Megan revealed her strange workout addiction, the meanest thing anyone has ever said about her body and her fun advice for looking and feeling your best.

megan mullallyFitz: You look great, Megan! What have you been up to?

Megan: I've been doing pilates three to four times a week for about two years now and I love it.

Fitz: Mat or reformer?

Megan: I do it all! I use the Reformer, the Cadillac, the chair and mat. I like a little bit of everything. I remember hearing about pilates over 20 years ago, as it was used to help dancers rehab from injuries. I don't know why I never tried it before now, though. I wish I had.

Fitz: Do you have a great pilates wardrobe?

Megan: I think I looked like an old housewife with a button-down shirt the first time I took a class. I hadn't worked out in over 10 years while I was doing "Will & Grace," so I literally had no gym clothes. Now I have the perfect wardrobe from LuLuLemon.

Fitz: What's the strangest thing you've ever done to stay fit?

Megan: Long ago, I literally became a step class addict. I actually ran with a dysfunctional group of step groupies and we would take two step classes a day. That lasted about three months.

Fitz: Were you the type to scream "whoo-hoo" during the class?

Megan: No. I wasn't a "whoo-hoo-er," but I did stare at myself in the mirror too much.

Fitz: What's the worst thing anyone has ever said to you about your body?

Megan: I know! I was pretty thin during the first season of "Will & Grace," and then I met my husband. We fell into a routine of staying up late drinking beer and eating KFC on a regular basis which of course made me gain a bit of weight. So sometime after we shot the second season of "Will & Grace," one of the creators asked me to meet him for a drink. I thought it was odd, but we had a nice night chatting, and I began to think he just must have missed me while we were on the break from filming the show. But as we were leaving, on the way out the door, he slyly mentions to me like sort of P.S. "You know it just occurred to me that if you really want to keep your job as Karen, her wealthy socialite character would probably be best played by a very thin woman!" I told him to go ahead and find himself a really thin woman for the part then.

Fitz: Good for you! I'm appalled by him, though. On that note, I've heard that other celebrities spend massive amounts each year to look good. Have you ever spent an outrageous amount of money on your appearance?

Megan: God, no. I'm like a man!

Fitz: Well then, if you weren't a celebrity, would you work out as often as you do?

Megan: Yes, because I love pilates.

Fitz: Your new show is called "In the Motherhood." Do you find the term "MILF" a compliment or derogatory?

Megan: I was actually supposed to play a GILF, because my character is over 50. But yes, MILF is definitely a compliment. I love it.

Fitz: Last question. What advice do you have for the average woman just trying to look and feel her best?

Megan: Focus on the mental aspects of your health. When I played the role of Elizabeth in "Young Frankenstein" on Broadway last year, I had to have red hair. I found that it made me feel more fun, and I started wearing more color. I just had my 50th birthday in November, and I know it's the opposite of how I'm supposed to feel, but I feel cute! I think if you feel good and have fun you'll look great too!

On a personal note, Megan's fans would be thrilled to know she's a really fun and easy person to talk to. She made me feel like we were old friends. Loved her!
