Cat Cora's Fridge - Fresh and Local

When "Shape" magazine took a sneak peek into three celebrity refrigerators, they liked what they saw. Granted, these weren't just any celebs: Cat Cora of "Iron Chef America," Gretta Monahan of "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" and Jackie Warner of Bravo's "Workout" all have one thing in common. They've made it their job to help other people look and feel good. It's no surprise, then, that these three women take great care of themselves. In Cora's fridge are nutritious foods like fresh and local produce and seafood, dijon mustard and tofu. Monahan's go-to foods are salmon, sugar-free Jello and granola (but not all at once!), and Warner prefers the simple life ... hard-boiled eggs, raw veggies and apples.
If "Shape" came to your door, what would you do? Throw open your fridge with pride? Or bar the door until you could hide the evidence? If it's the latter, help is on its way.
Bob Greene recently shared his favorite tips for "cleaning" the junk food out of your kitchen. Stock your fridge with fresh and healthy foods and ban treats (or at least keep them to a minimum) to eliminate those impulse decisions ... you know ... those I-really-shouldn't-have-eaten-that moments. Here's what to put in a fridge you'll be proud to show off:
- fresh fruits and veggies, washed and chopped, ready to eat
- healthy dips to put those veggies in, like hummus or salsa
- frozen fruits and veggies for cooking
- low-fat dairy -- milk, cheese, yogurt
- eggs
- orange juice -- rich in calcium and vitamin D
- vinaigrette made with olive oil (If you can't give up your creamy dressing, try thinning it with milk.)
- lean cuts of beef, poultry, or fish
Here's a few more tricks: Store your healthy foods right up front, in plain sight, and hide your indulgences in the back. Try freezing fresh fruit for a healthy snack; frozen grapes are a real treat in the summertime. Finally, plan regular treats so that cravings don't escalate ... a little chocolate syrup in a glass of milk, a handful of dark chocolate chips.
Confession time: Name one item in your fridge you wouldn't want the world to know about. Then share your favorite healthy meal or snack.
