Tuna Salad Sandwich - How Many Calories?

How Many Calories Posted on Mar 23rd 2009 12:00PM by Martha Edwards

When you're picking up lunch in a rush, you know a few rules of the game: One, stay away from fast food restaurants. Two, make sure you get your share of veggies. Three, fresh is best.

It would seem, then, that a tuna salad sandwich is the perfect fix for your mid-day hunger pangs. It's got healthy fish, it's got veggies (hence the word 'salad'), it's typically freshly-prepared and if you get it on brown bread, you've got all your food groups covered in one go.

But is a tuna salad sandwich your best lunchtime bet?

How Many Calories ... In a Tuna Salad Sandwich?
126 calories126 (8.7%)
353 calories546 (37.8%)
515 calories542 (37.6%)
667 calories229 (15.9%)
The answer, according to Nutrition Data, is 515 calories and 26 g of fat -- which is roughly the same amount as a Big Mac, so don't fool yourself into thinking you're making a 'healthy' choice. The problem with this sandwich is the added fat -- do you really need all that mayo? I didn't think so.

Why not make your own healthier tuna sandwich? Instead of mayo, use a bit of olive oil and lemon juice, and load your sandwich with healthy add-ons like olives, lettuce and tomato. Another way to cut calories? Enjoy your sandwich open-faced and slash around 120 calories from the total.
