How Does Your Waist Measure Up?
Categories: Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment
Belly fat is undesirable, to say the least. It's unsightly, but more importantly, it's unhealthy. So really, shouldn't we all be doing everything we can to get rid of it? But then, we hear things like," Marilyn Monroe wore a size 14," or "Kate Winslet has a crumbly stomach," and we think maybe we're not in such bad shape after all.Well, if you're going to compare your figure to a celebrity's, you should at least have the correct information, and the March issue of "Fitness" magazine has it. Check out these waist measurements and see how you measure up:
- Marilyn Monroe was super curvy, but had a 22-inch waist (clothing sizes have changed drastically since the 1950's).
- Audrey Hepburn weighed in at 103 pounds and had a 20-inch waist.
- Farrah Fawcett, one of America's greatest sex symbols, had a 24-inch waist.
- Jane Fonda, fitness queen, also had a 24-inch waist.
- Princess Diana's weight fluctuated widely, but her largest waist measurement was 27 inches.
- Kate Winslet has no problem baring her body, and she looks amazing, but surprisingly, she has a 29-inch waist.
Not quite on par with these famous figures? It's OK, but you should know that certain waist sizes increase health risks. A waist measurement greater than 35 inches makes women more than twice as likely to die of heart disease than women with a waist measurement of 28 inches or less. More than 32 inches around increases your diabetes risk, so it's not just a matter of vanity -- a trimmer tummy is far healthier!

The Perfect Female Body
By Ashley Neglia
Thanks to the oozing sexuality of Marilyn Monroe, the hourglass shape has been long sought after by women and coveted by men. But being nice on the eyes doesn't account for everything, and new research shows that this body type may not be optimal for a woman's health. The study, conducted by University of Utah anthropologist Elizabeth Cashdan, found that women with a higher waist-to-hip ratio are stronger, more competitive, better equipped to deal with stress and overall healthier than those with a smaller waist. Read on to find out which body type is best for a woman's health and why.

Rectangle
The new findings from University of Utah anthropologist Elizabeth Cashdan posit that rectangular-shaped women with similar bust, waist and hip sizes and a higher waist-to-hip ratio like Keira Knightley or Gwyneth Paltrow are physically stronger, more competitive and better able to withstand stress than other women due to higher levels of testosterone and stress-managing cortisol, both of which can cause weight gain in the abdomen.
Typically, studies have shown that a waist-to-hip (WHR) of 0.7 or lower is associated with higher fertility and lower rates of chronic disease. However, Cashdan found that women with a WHR of 0.8 are better able to support themselves and a family while meeting the demands of a stressful career than women with a lower WHR ratio.

Pear Shape
The Institute of Preventive Medicine in Copenhagen (IPM) found that women with a hip measurement of 40 inches (a size 8 or 10) or more may live longer than apple-shaped women. Because pear-shaped women carry most of their fat on the hips -- think Michelle Obama -- they're less likely to gain dangerous visceral fat in their abdomens.
Plus, subcutaneous fat located under the skin and stored on the hips is relatively harmless and may also result in an 86 percent reduced risk of coronary heart disease and 46 percent reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease, according to IPM. "It doesn't actively produce hormones or lead to inflammation, and it's a magnet for bad cholesterol, which means healthy high cholesterol," says Marie Savard, M.D., ABC News Medical Contributor and author of "The Body Shape Solution to Weight Loss and Wellness."

Pears Beware
While being pear shaped has its benefits, women with this body type are more likely to experience more severe symptoms of menopause and develop osteoporosis because subcutaneous fat produces a less potent form of estrogen, says Dr. Savard. In addition, she notes that women with curvier hips may be more likely to develop eating disorders in an effort to achieve what society values as ideal -- narrow hips and slender legs. If you want to balance out a heavier bottom half the healthy way, use strength-training to tone your upper body.

Apple Shape
A study by North Carolina State University found that 46 percent of women are apple-shaped. While this body type is characterized by slim hips and thighs with larger stomachs and flat behinds, apples like Drew Barrymore aren't necessarily overweight. However, unlike passive fat found in the hips, apples have a propensity to gain dangerous visceral fat that is stored in the abdomen, near vital organs.
"Most people think of fat as inert material, much like the rind of fat surrounding a steak. But fat is actually living, breathing, hormone-producing, metabolically active tissue," says Dr. Savard. In excess, visceral fat can increase a person's risk for diabetes and heart disease, create inflammation and raise blood pressure.

Apples Beware
A woman with a waistline larger than 32 inches is at an increased risk of diabetes and heart attack, according to the National Obesity Forum. Most women will eventually become apples due to estrogen loss, which results in weight loss in the hips, butt and thighs but not the stomach. "Women who take hormones at menopause don't lose their shape as quickly as other women," says Dr. Savard. To combat a growing waistline, she suggests walking 30 minutes per day, getting more than six hours of sleep per night and eating a diet rich in whole grains, fruit and vegetables.

Hourglass
Beyond having the most coveted of body shapes, women with hourglass figures have 30 percent more estrogen than other women. As a result, they are three times more likely to get pregnant, according to a study by Harvard University. While breast size doesn't determine your health, hourglass-shaped woman share the same health benefits of pear-shaped women -- like longevity and lower heart-disease risk -- because they're essentially the same body type. "Pear-shaped woman can be hourglass, too, if you happen to have big breasts as well," says Dr. Savard.

Hourglass Beware
Women with hourglass figures may find that they tend to put on weight easily and have a difficult time building muscle. Combat unwanted weight gain by maintaining a low-fat diet and doing cardio and strength-training exercises.

Determine Your Shape
All you need to discern if you're an apple, pear, hourglass or rectangle is some measuring tape. First, measure around the smallest part of your waist and record your waist circumference. Then measure the widest part of your hips. Divide the first number by the second to get your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). If your WHR is 0.8 or less, you are a pear. If your WHR is greater than 0.8, you are an apple. An hourglass shaped woman will have a WHR of 0.8 or less and a large bust, which is within two inches of her hip measurement. Rectangular-shaped women typically have similar waist, bust and hip measurements, giving them a waist line that appears less defined.

Shape Shifter
For the most part, changing your body shape isn't really up to you. You can reduce belly fat by ramping up cardio and eating a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts and fish, according to Dr. Savard. But if you're prone to putting on weight in that area, that's something that won't go away with time. And don't even think about liposuction.
Going under the knife isn't worth it because the only fat that can be removed is the healthy subcutaneous fat below the skin. "It's purely cosmetic and won't do any good," says Dr. Savard. "When a young woman removes her healthy fat, she has no place to put the extra pounds except in her belly. She's not tricking nature."

We have all been listening to this Hog Wash so long, we've somehow forgotten that stastistically, overweight people actually live longer then those who have been thin all of their life... There is not one ounce of truth to the so called "Facts" about weight, colesterol, heart attacks, longevity, ect, unless we are talking about morbid obesity, which is an illness only partially related to diet... There are no Centurians, who didn't have a large waist, at least for some years of their life and people who don't see doctors live longer then those who do

Wow your talking straight out of your backside. You are really going to sit there and say that people that do not get exercise and make pour choices eating are going to live longer than those that are in shape and take care of themselves? Are you mad or just stupid? I bet either way your overweight and trying to convince yourself that its ok and your perfectly healthy instead of moving your buns a bit and getting into shape. All because you rather eat your cake while you sit on your butt all day. Yeah your the perfect picture of health, if you tell yourself enough times maybe you will believe it but me and any other person with any common sense will not.

Waist line measurements are an indicator obesity but some of the people you mention Princess Diana and Jane Fonda also had eating disorders. Getting enough exercise, good diet, good blood chemistry, and good stress managment also play into the mix of good health. A long term balanced maintenance program of our physical, mental and spiritual health is so important as we wage the current war to survive and excell in our economy.

I think Kate Winslet is beautiful and honest about weight and weight issues. I think she is a great role model. I think she also looks to be have a perfect healthy figure!
I am presently doing weight watchers and love the program. They teach you how to change bad habits and
find an eating style that works. Not a quick fix however. I strive
to eat healthy and lead by example for my daughters. I eat fitflax
http://www.fitflax.com every morning for health and weight loss
reasons. I recently lost 30 pounds and am now just am more watchful every day of what I eat. I have a
banana low fat yogurt with fitflax for breakfast every day. It is filling, keeps me regular and tastes fabulous (kinda like sesame
seeds). My Weight Watchers leader recommended fitflax to me and it
definitely helped with the last 10 pounds. It is low carb and low
cal. I read about it in O mag. They also listed a code to get 10%
off. It is jm10

Me thinks, Kate Winslet is the only one (maybe Audrey Hepburn too), who is being honest about her waist size. Marilyn Monroe wore a corset all the time, she did not have a 22 inch waist naturally. I don't like many of Kate's films, but she does try to be honest and to dispel these stupid Hollywood type myths about how small someone's waist really is - 29 inches on someone of Kate's build is very attractive. Marilyn Monroe's was just unrealistically squidged to as small as they could get it - that is probably why she always sounded breathless! Audrey Hepburn would be the first to admit she had a boyishly thin figure, so her small waist would be expected as she was tiny everywhere.

You should have the waist size that is appropriate for your build. Life causes people's weight to fluctuate whether they are in Hollywood or not. We spend a fortune on looking good, clothing, makeup, cars, etc. I can tell you that the easiest and cheapest way to look good is to lose weight. Lookin' good is well worth the effort. I lost 47 pounds in 6 weeks using the Rapidthin diet at www.rapidthin.com. Good luck to all. Use what works for you.

if a 35" waist means a heart attack is in your future then does monroes22 " mean you are gonna be killed by a presidential candidate? or audrey'20" means your gonna steal roles from julie andrews and die from lung cancerjane fonda and farrah are still living so we will pass on them ,but the princesswith her 27" waist was doomed to die in a car crash at the hands of a really drunk driver? so kate my dear don't worry at all they haven't come up wiyh a way for 29" to meet the grim reaper, ( a hint ; keep your waist going up and down you'll drive them crazy

Actually, she probably did. There were no size 0's back then or for long after. I am 5'9 and used to model. The smallest size I was ever in (mid to late 1960's) was a size 8. Ten was better. My waist has never been smaller than 27", even then. I was quite thin. 115 lbs., then. Now I can wear a 10 at 155 lbs. Think, folks. Kate Winslet is the first to tell the truth and is healthy.
Linda 3-10-2009 @ 11:47AM
Sorry, Bopco, but statistics show that obesity is a predictor of mortality...you rarely see healthy 80-100 year olds who are fat. They are almost always on the thin side. I think Kate has a gorgeous figure, especially after childbirth. My waist got up to 34 and my weight up to 173 and I was headed to unhealthy city. I was lucky enough to get into a clinical trial for a medication combination that will probably be coming out later this year. The medication will be called Contrave (by Orexigen). I lost 63 pounds over 56 weeks, without too much effort. I struggled for years with losing weight.

My g'ma is 83 years old and a size 16. Her father lived to 86 and he wasn't thin either. Though weight is a part of being healthy, it is not all of it. You can be overweight and take care of yourself. My sister is a size 16 and runs 10k's at least once a month for the fun of it. No one can tell me none of these family members are not healthy.
Bopco 3-10-2009 @ 2:10PM
That depends on who's statistics you care to read... There are also No "Healthy" 80 + year olds and even heavy people tend to lose weight as they reach a ripe old age, Your liver and digestive track just won't pile on the pounds for you anymore.... They aren't trying to be "healthy", they are hanging on to life by a thread...
teresa 3-10-2009 @ 11:51AM
I am 5 2 and weigh 105 and am not anorexic like audrey hepburn; I still have hips and a rear end. Many people have flat rears and no hips but their weight is in the middle. There are three different body types; its all where it is distributed

Teresa: Audrey Hepburn was 5'7. She was extremely thin for her height with a bmi around 16. She wasn't always 103 pounds sometimes she was 105 or 110.
Waist size doesn't mean everything because often some people do not have a very defined waist but they are still quite healthy. Remember that there are different body types therefore various waist sizes for even people of the same height and similar weight. I think that you should have listed the heights of the women for better comparison.

PEOPLE...seriously...y'all need to remember that just because someone is heavier than society's norm...doesn't mean they are unhealthy... you can be 200 lbs and still be healthy--except for the number on the scale--just because someone is thin, doesn't mean they are medicine's picture of perfect health. A lot of thin people resort to unhealthy means to achieve it...There are those who have a larger frame, and therefore cannot be what is considered the perfect weight. I am one of those people... I have a BP of 120/78 my heart rate is around 66 bpm...my labs are perfect, no diabetes, and I CAN excercise without my HR going through the roof... Now, if I have to say that that is unacceptable because the numbers on the scale don't read perfect---I AM COMPLETELY OKAY with it...
I guess when I saw Kate's tummy measurment... it made me smile--its kind of comforting knowing she is a real person, who is closer to looking like the rest of us... shes a size 10 (I know it because I am an 12 and have a 31.5" waist)
