10 Minute Solution Kettlebell Ultimate Fat Burner DVD Review (No Kettlebell Required!)

Categories: Fitness

When I first received the 10 Minute Solution Kettlebell Ultimate Fat Burner DVD to review, I had two reservations. First, anything that promises a 10 minute solution gets my hackles up -- I mean, how much can one really accomplish in 10 minutes? And, second, I had never worked with kettlebells, and was kind of skeptical about a DVD requiring equipment that I'd never even used.

As far as the 10 minute issue goes, you can rest assured that the workout is far longer than 10 minutes -- it's made up of five 10-minute segments focusing on different parts of the body, although, most things you do using a kettlebell work your full body. The different segments (which all have a short warm up and cool down) actually worked out really well for me -- I did this on a really busy day, and it was convenient to do 10 or 20 minutes at a time.

To do this video, all you actually need is a dumbbell -- the instructor herself uses a dumbbell, but gives instructions for using either that or a kettlebell, so you can use whichever is handy for you.

Level of Difficulty
The workout was well-cued and easy to follow, but I wouldn't give it to someone who had never done any sort of workout video before. It's definitely intermediate -- I got a good workout, and during a couple of moves, I was huffing and puffing, but I wasn't drenched in sweat by the end. That might have been partly due to the fact that I didn't do the whole thing in one sitting, though.

Next Day Soreness
Holy cow, you guys -- my thighs are still giving me fits three days later (and trust me, that's a good thing). The rest of my body feels fine, though.

Who's It For?
Like I said, not for a first-timer, but I think it's a nice addition for anyone who wants to incorporate something new into their workout. It's pretty easy to modify -- use lighter (or heavier) weights to accommodate your strength and comfort level, and you always have the option to just not squat or lunge as low as she does on the video.

Likes
It turns out I really like the concept behind a kettlebell workout. I enjoyed seeing how using my lower body impacted my upper body, and the swinging of the weights (kettlebell workouts rely heavily on momentum) was a fun change -- I really felt like I was using my full body, and it made it easy to do lots of reps. Plus, I love the fact that they show you how to do kettlebell work with a dumbbell -- really smart.

Dislikes
I would have liked more variety from segment to segment. There were a few moves that were really fun the first time, but they were used in several other segments, which made it a little monotonous. And, the upper body section probably could have focused a little more on the upper body.

Bottom Line
This is a video I would do again, for sure -- I can see doing a couple of sections after going for a run, or in addition to a swim. And, I think I could really get into kettlebell work! If you have any interest in seeing what it's all about, you can find it here.
