Curious to know how celebrities squeeze fitness into their daily lives? Want to know the secrets of the stars? Bi-weekly our That's Fit fitness expert Fitz sits down with the celebs we want to know more about, and digs out their great and not-so-great methods to staying healthy.
Two-time Dancing with the Stars Champion Cheryl Burke has had quite a year. Five tiny pounds on her little dancer's body caused tabloid hysteria, and now she's starring in her own series of workout DVDs called Disco Abs. She came clean with me on the inspiration behind this belly blasting workout, her infamous weight gain, and who she'd love to partner up with on DWTS. She even shares expert advice on dancing in stilettos; definitely read it before you try it.
Fitz: Tell me about Disco Abs.
Cheryl: It's a series of three workout DVD's set to disco music. The workouts are based on a bunch of fun dance moves, and that's what I love most about them. They're so much fun that you forget you're working really hard.
Fitz: Fun is vital to people sticking with it. And what component is directly geared towards abdominal training?
Cheryl: I never lie down on the ground to do ab work; I just find it incredibly boring. But the twisting motions of these dances always work the abs. We're also burning tons of fat while sweating our brains out.
Fitz: How many takes did you have to shoot?
Cheryl: Oh my God! We shot for an entire week. I don't think I've ever been so sore. It's way harder to dance while smiling and talking. You'll hear me huffing and puffing a lot.
Fitz: Do you love your abs?
Cheryl: I don't have a six-pack, but my belly is very flat and I love how dancing keeps my entire body healthy.
Fitz: Last year, you endured a bizarre controversy over your weight. Was it really just five pounds?
Cheryl: Every year I seem to be stuck in some sort of odd controversy. I think I was photographed on the beach in Hawaii with my family and friends on my first summer off in a long time. I wasn't dancing 6-8 hours each day like I normally do, and I gained a few extra pounds. Everybody made a big deal for nothing.
Fitz: Did you lose the weight?
Cheryl: Yes! As soon as I went back to my normal dancing schedule and returned to my very conscientious eating habits ... my weight returned to normal.
Fitz: Did it bother you?
Cheryl: I'm human, so yes it did. But I'm fortunate to have an amazing support system of friends and family to get me through it.
Fitz: What is your favorite healthy food?
Cheryl: I love breakfast, and usually have an egg white omelet on wheat toast.
Fitz: What's your favorite not-so-healthy food?
Cheryl: Bread! Bread and butter!
Fitz: Who would your dream partner be on DWTS?
Cheryl: I would LOVE to dance with Antonia Banderas, but I bet he'd never come on the show.
Fitz: What advice do you have to give for dancing in stilettos?
Cheryl: Wow! I feel like I was born in them. They make a woman's leg look so beautiful, but my advice would be to be careful! My shoes are special dancer's shoes so they're a bit safer than your regular variety. And ... don't step on anyone's feet with them.
Fitz: Thanks for taking the time to chat, Cheryl, and good luck this season on DWTS. I look forward to checking out Disco Abs!
