Mushrooms - The Key to Calorie Cutting
Categories: Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements

The nutrition experts at RealAge say substituting mushrooms for red meat can help you slash lots of calories. Mix chopped mushrooms into your lasagna, sloppy joes, chili and other ground beef dishes (but don't include the ground beef, of course), and you'll naturally eat 420 less calories. You'll feel plenty full too.

Mushrooms are great if you are trying to watch your weight. They give you lots of vitamins and minerals with very little calories and fat. Because mushrooms are 90% water and contain some fibre they fill you up, leaving less room for calorie-laden and high fat foods.

I've been using this trick for years by cutting ground beef by more than half with diced mushrooms. The kids can't tell and neither have guests who've tried my chili or meat sauce!

A friend of mine in college got me started on mushrooms. Otherwise, I never ate them. She put mushrooms on everything, and many times would eat them washed and raw, with a mix of hot sauce and mustard on top. It was a little weird at first, but now I eat mushrooms at least once every day. And it's helped a lot with staying on track for weight loss - mushrooms are one vegetable that actually help speed up metabolism!
