2008 Caffeine Survey - Tampa Bumps Chicago for Most Buzzed

Seattle, the mecca of drive-thru java huts, may be number one nationwide for slurping down coffee, but it's not the most caffeinated. The 2008 HealthSaver Caffeinated Cities Survey is out and Tampa gets Most Buzzed, while last year's most-wired Chicago bumped down to third. Seattle secured second. What's up with a relaxed, sunny Floridian needing caffeine? I've hung out in Tampa before and never noticed a caffeine culture. But I can speak for my hometown Chicago loving its coffee, especially during an arctic blast.

Maybe hot Tampa residents are downing ice cold soda. Beyond coffee, the survey measured other caffeine sources including tea, sodas, energy drinks, chocolate, pain relievers and caffeine pills. Tampa, are you in pain?

Interestingly, a bipolar New York jumped from third to last in the 2007 survey, to fourth most caffeinated in 2008. Election jitters? In the same time span, Atlanta's buzz dropped from fifth most caffeinated to the bottom five. The cities scoring in the middle for coffee consumption are doing it right. According to one coffee expert at the Vanderbilt School of Medicine, newer studies prove coffee in moderation is good for one's health. I'm liking this moderation concept -- today I was a decaf girl, time for a cuppa leaded tomorrow.
