Biggest Loser Couples Lose 382 Premiere Pounds
Categories: Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Motivation

Before I get into who got voted off, let's rewind to the start. The premiere opened with Trainer Sergeants Bob and Jillian getting in the face of America. Aggressive close-ups had them asking Americans what is it going to take to change? When are you going to drive past a drive-thru? Around 300,000 people are dying from obesity each year. This show doesn't mean anything if you're going to sit there eating. Morbid obesity runs rampant across this country, but Biggest Loser has shown us it's entirely possible to lose the weight. Viewers have realized their own incredible transformations at home. Bob and Jillian are tired of excuses ... are you? Onto the show.
Trainer-Free First Workout -- In a cruel, yet revealing stunt, contestants were told their very first workout would be on their own, as the Peeping Tom Trainer Sergeants observed via camera backstage. Jillian described the bewildered crew as lost in the gym, lost in their lives. Jillian has a way with words, doesn't she? Fortunately, the lost sheep found their Trainer Shepherds. In a fun twist, the trainers established teams by each picking a pair, then those teams picked a team, and so on. To take the sting out of Last Picked, the final remaining team, Kristin and Cathy, had the privilege of choosing their trainer. They chose Bob amidst a flurry of whoop-it-up screams. Who would you have chosen?
Doc Huizenga's Wake-Up Call -- If you want to know what morbid obesity does to your insides, just look at the MRI scans of contestants' abdominal cavities. Player after player met with the doc and were informed they had enlarged livers from fatty deposits, smaller lung capacity from fat literally scrunching up their lungs, fat depositing around other organs because the skin is already saturated. This is life or death, and as Bob said at the start, 11 teams have entered the House of Hope. Thank goodness.
Gastric Bypass Is No Panacea -- Ron weighed in at 430 pounds. He formerly had gastric bypass. His stomach is the size of an egg, but he still gained it back. Both his sons are morbidly obese. I am confident Biggest Loser can help him -- he lost the most weight ever dropped in a single week -- 32 pounds.
Photo Finish Challenge -- After teams ran back and forth over a 250,000-pound hill of sand, Black's Blaine and Dane nipped Aubrey and Mandi to claim immunity. A significant prize, if you consider what happened next.
Nine Fridge Lights On The Fritz -- Other than Black team (immunity), the only team allowed to perch above the elimination yellow line had to win the weigh-in. That left nine teams facing elimination of one team member. Yup, in a wild moment, nine teams were split up as one contestant from each duo was sent home. But their fridge lights are flickering -- if their teammate is still on the show after 30 days, they can return. Whoa, I'm scratching my head on this one. Motivating to the remaining contestants for sure, but can one week on the ranch instill healthy diet and fitness habits for the poor souls sent packing? Yet I will be excited to see half return. How did you feel about it? Shoot us a comment.
Week 1 is a wrap. An amazing 382 total pounds lost. Which member of Jillian's team will puke next week? She already had former model Laura yucking up a treadmill. I'm relieved 19-year-old Daniel remains at the ranch. He's a sweet kid and is already down 30 pounds from his record starting weight of 454 pounds. Set your DVR, VCR, beg your friends to set theirs -- Biggest Loser Couples airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC. See you next week at the House of Hope.

I think this show, which I love for transforming people's lives, runs the risk of becoming a joke. Some of this first episode was a bit on the exploited side, the sound effects while Jerry was passing out were over the top and unnecessary and I think sending people home day one was a sad twist. If they don't have help at home, there is no way this will work. They were vague about what "going home" meant, so hopefully they will still have some form of help. Focus on making people better, not the silly stuff!!!

Mark,
I know what you mean, it was a bit of a circus show to have a Trainer-Free First Workout. I didn't like it, what was the point? It wasn't all that revealing and simply poked fun at contestants.
The blogosphere is generally not happy about the 9 heading home. But it looks like 5 will be back as their better half at the ranch works their butt off to get them there. I'm hanging onto that.
With the huge weights of several contestants, Season 7 is going to be interesting.

I was so disappointed in the show, that they would send nine people home after only one week. That was so unfair to the contestants who possibly walked away from their jobs to be on this show or made arrangements for family care. I think it was wrong. Actually I think it's wrong to send anyone home after a week. They should all get a couple of weeks there to learn about eating habits etc... or the show risks becoming a tabloidish series playing with people's lives.

Diane, i felt the same way you did! I think they should have NO eliminations until maybe 2-3 weeks in, just so people can learn a healthy lifestyle before going home and doing it on their own. I do think they should have weekly weigh-ins though, because it's so inspiring for these people to understand that healthy eating and exercise really does work. I also agree with the comment above that it's becoming a "circus". This show should be first and foremost about changing people's lives, not twists and turns. It's not a soap opera or something - it's about fighting the obesity epidemic!! They've got Bob & Jillian saying one thing and then the producers pitching another. It's contradictory and disappointing.
