Vegetarian - No Meat But More Fat?

Vegetarian dishes can be healthy. But buyer beware: Foods labeled "vegetarian" on packages or in restaurants might be meatless but are not always fatless.

Some veggie meals can be high in fat. Textured soy patties, soy hot dogs, soy cheese, refried beans and all sorts of health bars come with a fair amount of fat. Even tofu is a slippery slope -- four ounces has about 95 calories and six grams of fat. More than you want? Might want to steer clear. And that vegetarian enchilada pictured above? Could be healthy, but sour cream and nachos? Not so much.

We're all for the vegetarian lifestyle here. But we encourage you to read nutritional labels so fat doesn't derail your diet. A registered dietitian can also help you build a food plan that is low in fat.
