Cravings - Control Them With the Stopwatch Method

How long do you think your cravings last? You might be surprised.
According to Dr. Jana Klauer, one of New York City's top weight-control specialists, most cravings only last between eight and 14 minutes. Surprising, isn't it? I know it sure feels like a lot longer when I'm jonesing for some chocolate peanut butter cup ice cream.
To battle your cravings, Dr. Klauer recommends using the stopwatch method:
- Time it. When you feel those chips in the cupboard calling your name, set your watch. Wait it out and see if the craving doesn't go away after 14 minutes.
- Drink water. While waiting, drink a bit glass of water. Often, our bodies mistake dehydration for hunger.
- Power up with protein. Get a protein-rich snack to tide you over. Dr. Klauer recommends snacks that are also high in calcium (e.g. a few ounces of cheese or a yogurt).
