Cravings - Control Them With the Stopwatch Method

Posted on Dec 22nd 2008 6:00AM by Maggie Vink
How long do you think your cravings last? You might be surprised.

Daily Fit Tip logoAccording to Dr. Jana Klauer, one of New York City's top weight-control specialists, most cravings only last between eight and 14 minutes. Surprising, isn't it? I know it sure feels like a lot longer when I'm jonesing for some chocolate peanut butter cup ice cream.

To battle your cravings, Dr. Klauer recommends using the stopwatch method:

  • Time it. When you feel those chips in the cupboard calling your name, set your watch. Wait it out and see if the craving doesn't go away after 14 minutes.
  • Drink water. While waiting, drink a bit glass of water. Often, our bodies mistake dehydration for hunger.
  • Power up with protein. Get a protein-rich snack to tide you over. Dr. Klauer recommends snacks that are also high in calcium (e.g. a few ounces of cheese or a yogurt).
