Cardio and Core Training with Donny Osmond
Categories: Celebrity Fitzness Report, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment
Today I chatted with Donny Osmond. That almost feels silly to say. Not that he's silly, but because he's been a part of my life for about as long as Santa Claus has. Fortunately, I like him even more now than I did a few hours ago. Donny has spent his entire career in the spotlight, and at 51 years of age, he looks just about as great as he ever has.
He's performing in Vegas right now and hosting a new show on ABC called Rediscovered, airing December 22 at 9 PM ET, which sounds pretty fun. Rediscovered gives adults who unsuccessfully auditioned to be a Mouseketeer 20 years ago a second chance at stardom and a $50,000 prize. Donny and Marie were sold on the concept and are enjoying the opportunity to see these "regular people" shine on stage. Read on to learn more about the show, how Donny stays fit, and whether or not he's going to take his shot at Dancing With the Stars!
Fitz: So you're back on prime-time television. What drew you to Rediscovered?
Donny: Marie and I just loved the concept. It's been amazing to see these regular people dragged out of their normal lives and put back on the stage. The show is fun, the audiences have been really receptive and the contestants have proven to be terrific.
Fitz: Since the contestants haven't been performing for a living, are any of them disastrously horrible?
Donny: Actually, I'd say four out of five of them blew me away! They've been so good that I've wondered why they weren't chosen in their audition 20 years ago.
Fitz: Are there mean judges?
Donny: Not at all. No Simon Cowells. The show is all positive and everyone is buoyed up. Besides the fifty grand, Marie and I also give a special prize to the winner.
Fitz: Sounds really fun! But ... on to fitness, and you're looking the part of "TV star." Do you work out?
Donny: Absolutely! I do all of my cardio on stage during the Vegas show. Some of my dance numbers are really vigorous. I also have a great trainer who has me doing a lot of core training. We use the BOSU a bunch. Sometimes I jog on it, and sometimes I do push-ups with one hand on it.
Fitz: It sounds like you have a really well-rounded fitness routine.
Donny: I do! The gym I use at The Flamingo is also really nice. I think I'm in better shape now than I have been in the past 20 or 30 years.
Fitz: What are your eating habits like?
Donny: I am very careful. I don't diet, but I just really watch what I eat. My wife is an expert on organic food, and we don't eat any grease at all.
Fitz: What's your favorite healthy food?
Donny: Edamame
Fitz: What's your favorite not-so-healthy food?
Donny: Chocolate covered edamame! Just kidding -- I think we all need a banana split every once in a while.
Fitz: What's on your mp3 player?
Donny: Oh, it's eclectic. Everything from Sinatra to Rihanna.
Fitz: What is an Osmond Christmas really like?
Donny: It used to be crazy but since we've all had kids, it's slowed down quite a bit. My two older sons will be away this Christmas, so I think we'll take the little ones to Disneyland for some fun.
Fitz: Football is a huge part of this season. Have any predictions for the BCS championship?
Donny: I love to play armchair quarterback, but I've been so busy this year I haven't had an opportunity to keep up.
Fitz: Well if you don't mind, I'll give you a team to root for. I'm a Gator, so maybe that could be your pick too?
Donny: You got it! I'm officially rooting for the Gators now.
Fitz: Hooray! Do you have any advice for the average Joe or Jane just trying to become more fit?
Donny: I believe in moderation. It's OK to enjoy some chocolate; you just have to keep it down to one piece.
Fitz: Last but not least, will you be taking your shot at Dancing With the Stars?
Donny: You know, about 90 percent of the people I meet backstage at our shows ask me that. And I can honestly say that as of right now ... I'm leaning towards yes. I think it would be an enormous challenge, but I really am considering doing it.
Fitz: Well, I can't wait to see you on both Rediscovered and Dancing with the Stars then! Thank you for spending so much time with Donny, you are truly a delight!
**Sidebar to all of Donny's fans: He is just as pleasant, warm and funny in person as he is on stage. A genuinely delightful person.

Hi Fitz...it seems we have two things in common...Gators (I'm from Florida, now living in NC) and a huge Donny fan!!! I also met Donny in a meet and greet at one of his concerts in Vegas and felt he is truly genuine and sweet. It is refreshing to have had validated what I knew all along...I can't wait to see him again on stage with Marie this coming Spring. Enjoy your holidays...
