Don't Be a Victim of the Season

A. Happy Holidays, Colin! Thanks for writing. I've got some pretty clear advice for you, which is the same advice I'd give if you showed up for a personal training session with me. Get a grip! Put a moratorium on the indulgences and focus on fighting that new fat.

Four pounds in one month means you've consumed about an extra 15,000 calories in only 15 days. That's a lot! This weight gain is not undo-able, you just have to hit your personal pause button. It's time to look at what you've been doing and then do the opposite. Instead of enjoying whatever is offered to you, start saying "no thank you." Plan to work out vigorously most of the days between now and January 1.

Lots of people will think I'm a jerk for suggesting you take control of yourself, but that's why you wrote me. Right? Four pounds is fairly easy to lose with a decent and consistent amount of effort. And of course "less food" doesn't mean "less fun." Spending time with loved ones, gift giving, winter sports and holiday festivities is what this season is all about. You don't have to gorge to enjoy it!

I'm proud of you for reaching out, and I expect to hear from you when you're back to your regular weight. Now get to work!
