Kids Cooking is Stepping it Up a Notch
Categories: Nutrition & Supplements
What comes to mind when you think of kid recipes? Growing up, I know I was relegated to making cookies and cupcakes -- Mom just didn't trust me with much else. But the definition of what kids can and can't cook is changing, according to the New York Times. Now kid-targeted cookbooks offer up recipes like roast chicken, brisket and other main dishes. It's not just a move that will benefit lazy parents -- it's a healthy one too. After all, kids who only know how to make cookies could end up eating a lot of cookies. And teaching kids how to cook healthy foods for themselves at an early age is a way to get them interested in fresh food and taking part in preparing it.
What do you think? Would you want your little one cooking up a chicken?

That's very neat.
Doing the thought exercise, I think it's a new phenomenon because technology for doing this has only just become common enough.
Previously, cooking was difficult, and much of it required handling sharp knives or being over dangerous stoves. Dessert was easy to teach children because it had significant no-cutting, off-the-stove preparation.
However, we now have microwaves and the neat safety stoves with flat surfaces, which drastically increases the level of safety when cooking. We have knives that will cut various objects without slicing fingers.
The level of food safety and medical science has gone up drastically too. Hospitals have become rather adept at curing food poisoning. And, due to modern safety practices (including questionable ones such as injecting animals with antibiotics), undercooked meat is less likely to give people diseases in the first place. People are less likely to get seriously ill and die of the child doesn't cook the meat properly. Furthermore, easy-to-read digital thermometers are now very cheap and easy to find, so it's much easier for an inexperienced person to judge when food is safe.
Technology is a wonderful thing.
