Q. Happy Holidays Fitz! I'll be hosting a Christmas party for some friends and family members next week and I need some help. I'm providing a healthy dinner buffet, but am stuck on a "not so awful for you" dessert. I could stick with fruit, but I think I should provide something more traditional. Have any ideas? Thanks in advance. Nina
A. Merry Christmas, Nina! I love your question because I am an expert on super substitutions. I can and do make almost every type of dessert in a more nutritious way. And! I do it without sacrificing flavor. Isn't that fancy? Oddly enough, if I weren't a fitness professional, I'd want to be a baker. I love baking! I'm just the weird kind of baker who hasn't owned oil or butter for more than 10 years. This forces me to be creative.
Go ahead and make a cake or some cookies my dear, just change around some ingredients. I want you to use these substitutions and you'll dramatically decrease the fat and calories in your tasty treats .
- Substitute eggs for "Egg Beaters" or the generic version.
- Substitute oil and/or butter for sugar-free syrups. DaVinci Gourmet makes some great flavors. Use equal amounts of syrup as you would butter or oil.
- Use Splenda instead of sugar whenever appropriate.
- Use fat free cream cheese and fat free sour cream whenever possible.
I've published some of my favorite dessert recipes in my online recipe book at Fitzness.com. My favorites are Fitz's Ultimate Low Fat Chocolate Chip Cookies, Low Fat Key Lime Pie, and the Fat Free Cream Cheese Frosting.
Nina, I'm a girl who loves to eat incredibly healthy 90 percent of the time. The other 10 percent allows me some room to make lesser choices. Having said that, I still prefer my "sweet treats" to be better versions. Why have regular Doritos when I can have the baked version and feel equally satisfied? Test out some "healthier" recipes and have a great time at your party. You are a very thoughtful hostess!

Hi, Fitz. I have a problem. I love garlic and often find myself adding it to a lot of my foods. What's a way that would help rid me of my garlic breath and odor?
