Which Grey's Anatomy Star Can Kick You in the Head?

Categories: Celebrity Fitzness Report, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Curious to know how celebrities squeeze fitness into their daily lives? Want to know the secrets of the stars? Bi-weekly our That's Fit fitness expert Fitz sits down with the celebs we want to know more about, and digs out their great and not-so-great methods to staying healthy.

Scottish actor Kevin McKidd, known best as Dr. Owen Hunt on ABC's Grey's Anatomy, has had his health and fitness habits completely uprooted as a result of his career. Besides starring on a hit prime time TV show, Kevin starred in Rome and has an athletic role in the upcoming action movie Bunraku. He used to be a carb addict and now he's passionate about the fighting arts and fitness. Pay close attention to the lessons he's learned to stay hot in Hollywood and see if they can change your life as well.

Fitz: The characters you play are usually pretty fit. What type of training do you do?

Kevin: Fitness has always been a part of my life, but it's become a much bigger part because of my job. I just finished an action movie called Bunraku (with Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson), which I did a lot of martial arts training for.

Fitz: My sport is kickboxing; it's the best exercise ever! How did you like it?

Kevin: It was great fun. I had a boxing trainer, and I did a lot of rounds hitting the bag and his mitts. During the week, I trained with the stunt team.

Fitz: What's your favorite strike?

Kevin: Spinning hook kick.

Fitz: I love that one too, great choice! You've played a variety of good and bad guys, which do you like best?

Kevin: You know, I try to avoid doing either too much, because I'd hate to be typecast. Being a bad guy is much more fun, but the good guys I play like Dr. Hunt on Grey's Anatomy tend to be slightly tortured so they're always interesting.

Fitz: What are your eating habits like?

Kevin: Oh, I used to eat terribly! If there were pizza, biscuits or cake in my sight, I'd eat them all! But when I hit my 30's things changed. Plus, my job also requires me to look a certain way ... so it's important that I eat well.

Fitz: That's true.

Kevin: I'm Scottish, and I think the Scottish diet is the worst in the world. I never actually diet now, but I control portions and stick with lean protein. I'm always up for an occasional whiskey on ice or beer though.

Fitz: What's your favorite healthy food?

Kevin: I'm in to interesting salads now. Grilled chicken with spinach, cheese, grapes, walnuts, apple slices, and balsamic vinegar.

Fitz: Favorite not-so-healthy dish?

Kevin: I have lots of those! A local restaurant called Pace makes slow cooked chocolate pudding with ice cream; it's incredible.

Fitz: Have any advice for the average Jane or Joe just trying to become more fit?

Kevin: Intensity counts! I think people would get a lot more out of doing 15 minutes of highly intense exercise versus 60 minutes of slower activity. Push your body if you want it to be better.

Fitz: That's fantastic advice, Kevin. I'm always trying to yank the best out of people. Last question:Will you doing any special gift exchanges this year?

Kevin: I already bought myself a guitar and my 8-year-old son a double bass kit. So instead of putting a bunch of nonsensical little gifts under the tree, my whole family will be pooling our money and donating it to a charity.

Fitz: What a kind and generous idea. Kevin, thanks so much for the chat. You're truly a great role model for fitness. Hopefully our audience will follow your lead.
