Q. Fitz, I'm sick of feeling sick at the end of Thanksgiving Day. I seem to eat all day, even when I'm not hungry. I literally feel like the clothes I put on that morning don't fit me anymore. I'm dreading it this week. What do I do? Alex
A. Gobble Gobble, Alex! I mean ... don't Gobble Gobble, Alex. (Bad joke, I know). Holidays, particularly Thanksgiving, often lead to really weird amounts of mindless eating. It doesn't help that this particular day is actually based on a feast. Darn Pilgrims! Why couldn't they show their gratitude with a running race? I can help you avoid this scenario, though. No one likes to unbutton their jeans to be able to sit down. It's uncomfortable, embarrassing and depressing. So let's get proactive, make a plan and stick with it.
Your first decision is to skip the appetizers. If you're going to indulge in some tasty Thanksgiving tastes, let it be the dinner. Chips and dip are available year-round. So you can put that panicky feeling to rest.
Second. Get active during the day. Instead of loafing around watching football with a plate on your lap, go out and play football. My family rents a massive bounce house each year and everyone from the babies to the grandparents get in there. It's a blast! We also play football, soccer and tag. It keeps us active, happy and away from the appetizers.
Third. Enjoy your meal but when your tummy says it's full, pay attention! Once again, all of your favorite holiday dishes are available year-round. So if you suddenly re-fall in love with mashed potatoes, take comfort in the fact that you can whip some up next week.
Last. I give you my full blessing to enjoy dessert. If there are low-fat options available, take them. But if not, enjoy one piece of pie and then call it a night.
You've reached out to me, Alex, because you know you'll end your night in remorse if you repeat you actions from Thanksgivings past. Wake up Thursday with a plan, and execute it. Then email me back to brag about your success. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
