The Biggest Loser Families - November 11th episode

Posted on Nov 13th 2008 7:30AM by Bev Sklar

The Biggest Loser Families this week was a treasure chest of diet and nutrition advice sandwiched between soap opera cookie scenes devoid of any nourishing inspiration. Soap star Vicky continued her mean streak when she incessantly insulted Phil -- didn't you love it when Trainer Bob called her "maniacal" and the "biggest game player" ever? But onto the diet, nutrition and more motivational aspects of the show.

Bye-bye teams, we're back to singles with a twist -- eliminated contestants sauntered their thinner bods back to the ranch this week to compete in a challenge for one return spot. Fastest player scurrying up and down a single step 1,000 times was Heba's less-big guy, Ed. Suspense cranked up as Stacey nearly overtook him, delivering the show's first lesson -- Second Place can be just as good as First Place. You may not have the best physique in the gym, the lowest resting heart rate in the running club or the Proudest Warrior in yoga class, but fighting hard at your diet/nutrition best is a winning philosophy.

Prevention magazine shared Three Diet Tips and awarded each contestant $5,000 worth of groceries. If I listen to the tips, can I have the groceries, too? Here they are:

  • That pint of beer is nutritionally equivalent to 1-2 slices of bread. Switch to light beer and cut carbs and calories by at least 50 percent.
  • Fight picky eaters with a Blindfold Taste Test. Many picky eaters walk around with the preconceived notion that if it's good for you, it doesn't taste good. They see a cherry tomato and they're gone. Literally blindfold those preconceptions, then have picky try a fruit or veggie or even that almond butter on a whole-grain cracker. It's time to blindfold the kids -- love it.
  • Pre-portion your sweets. Cut that batch of brownies into small servings, wrap and toss in the freezer -- it will keep you from eating half the pan.

Don't Miss Trainer Gems

  • Each trainer has quotes on the wall in the gym. Cameras rolled on these three -- Trainer Bob says, "I know it hurts, but I'm saving your life right now." Morbid obesity is a serious health problem. Changing habits can be rough, but The Biggest Loser contestants say over and over it's worth it.
  • Hire a personal trainer like Bob and you'll hear, "Are you ready? You bet you are!" Hey, you're reading That's Fit, which means you're already a passionate student of healthy living like us bloggers.
  • Jillian has razor sharp claws in the gym with her attitude, "Do it because I said so, that's why." You have to be strong and courageous to survive Jillian's heart-felt connections countered with killer push in the gym. I love her style.

Amy strategically seceded from the old Blue alliance when her surprise betrayal vote bumped Brady off the show. Amazingly, Brady's in the running for that glorious Second Place, losing 100 pounds so far and ditching his 48-inch waist for a 34. But watch out for a revenge cat fight between Vicky and Amy back at the ranch. See you next week!
