Celebrity Fitzness Report: Samantha Who? star James Tupper
Categories: Celebrity Fitzness Report, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment
Curious to know how celebrities squeeze fitness into their daily lives? Want to know the secrets of the stars? Bi-weekly, our That's Fit fitness expert Fitz sits down with the celebs we want to know more about, and digs out their great and not-so-great methods to staying healthy.
James Tupper plays "Owen", the hunky new rich guy getting busy with Christina Applegate's character on Samantha Who? He's a rising star who spent two years working opposite Ann Heche (his girlfriend in real-life) in Men in Trees and has also worked on hit shows like CSI:New York, Gilmore Girls and many others. James greeted me with a super cheery "Hi Fitz!" for this interview and was really sarcastic and fun throughout. He's an easy guy who loves carpentry, outdoor exercise and playing with Anne's 6-year-old son Homer.
Want to know how he prepares to show skin on camera? Read on!
Fitz: I love Samantha Who? It's such a cute show. What's it like working with the lovely Miss Christina Applegate?
James: It's amazing. She is a fantastic comedian. We work 14-hour days, and she is awesome from beginning to end. I really enjoy working with her. She's also really smart; she blows through crossword puzzles on the set.
Fitz: Those are really hard! I have a Master's Degree, but crosswords tend to make me feel really dumb.
James: Me too! I give kudos to her for doing them. I'd have to secretly use a dictionary to keep up.
Fitz: How many episodes will you be appearing in?
James: Right now it's open-ended, but my first show was November 3rd.
Fitz: I saw it, and were great! And ... you ended up in bed with "Samantha." Do you prepare physically when you know you have to take your shirt (or more) off on film?
James: Well, I like to go for three or four mile runs several times each week. There's an indoor track I use a lot. I also play in a basketball league on the weekends. I also like to play football with my girlfriend Anne's 6-year-old son, Homer.
Fitz: How do you stay on a team with your work and travel schedule?
James: They just understand that I can't be there all the time.
Fitz: Do you stress over how you're body is going to look on film?
James: No. I tend to have faith in the camera operators above all. They're supposed to help us look great and they do.
Fitz: Nice to have so much faith.
James: It does make me shy, though. When I was filming Men in Trees in Vancouver, we became a big family. When I had to get close to naked in a scene, it was a little weird being surrounded by that huge crew. Trust me. None of those guys wanted to trade places with me!
Fitz: What are your eating habits like?
James: I've actually started eating really well this summer. Anne and I would get lots of fresh foods at the Farmer's Market, and we cooked a lot of recipes from the Joy of Cooking cookbook.
Fitz: What's your favorite healthy food?
James: Anne makes homemade noodles with Asian chicken. I love it!
Fitz: What's your favorite not-so-healthy food?
James: Right now, it's Pixie Stix!
Fitz: Ack! They're pure sugar. I used to eat them in elementary school!
James: Exactly! Homer and I spend like 20 minutes each weekend just devouring them.
Fitz: Unreal. So on that note, Mr. Pixie Stix ... thanks so much for spending time with me. Your first episode on Samantha Who? was fantastic. I look forward to seeing what's to come!
James: Bye Fitz!
***James is ridiculously charming and his big bright smile doesn't hurt him too much either. He lights up the screen on Samantha Who? Check it out Monday's at 9:30pm/ET on ABC.
