Bowling - a lot of fun and a little exercise

Categories: Fitness

man holding bowling ballYou may not think bowling and fitness belong in the same sentence, but bowling can be a healthful activity. My son and I have a system in place to encourage each other to exercise. He's recently taken up running, and I'm working out with a fitness DVD. As a reward for each of us completing 20 miles, we're going bowling this Friday.

While it certainly can't replace your regular workout, bowling is a great choice for a fun evening. Whether you're hanging out with your kids, spending time with friends, or going on a date with your significant other, bowling is a good option. Rather than eating a high-calorie meal at a restaurant or sitting still at a movie, you'll be up and moving. Here are some ways to make bowling a healthier night out:

  • Don't sit down while watching others take their turns-- step back from the lane and walk around.
  • Skip the beer, pizza and other unhealthy treats at the alley. Eat a filling, nutritious meal before you go so you won't be tempted and just sip on water while you're there.
  • Work on improving your bowling form. Just like every sport, there is technique and form to bowling (and, no, "granny shots" are not good technique).
  • Don't choose the lightest bowling ball you can find. You'll use your muscles more with an appropriately-weighted ball, and you'll probably bowl a better game, too.

Remember, while (fitness-wise) bowling is a better night out than more sedentary options, it isn't vigorous enough to replace your regular physical activity routine.
