Greatest fitness accomplishment? I smoked for more than 22 years, but I stopped 14 months and 15 days ago. I ran my first 5K one month after I quit. I ran the same 5K 13 months later at my personal best which was four minutes faster than the first time. I also competed in my first biathlon this month and finished ahead of 30 people, which is not bad for an ex-smoker.

Best fitness advice? Take it slow. It takes more than just exercise to get fit. You need a combination of exercise and healthy eating. I didn't say diet because of the negative tone the word now has. You're better off removing one bad thing at a time from your diet while adding something good. Then go for a few weeks before you remove another. Replace bad things with fruits or veggies that have some fiber. Things that make you feel full longer is the key. Another key is to eat often. I eat about six or more times a day. I've broken down my calorie intake for most meals or snacks to be around 200 calories or less. I figured your body needs only so much energy to function during the day and if you eat too much it will just get stored as fat after your tanks (glucose) are full. Make a diary of what your daily intake is and monitor it. It's alright to fall of the wagon for a day or weekend. Just jump back on when you can and work a little bit harder as you exercise. For exercise, try biking, walking, running or anything that gets you out of the house. It's amazing how hard you can push your body with your mind. Do it for yourself. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it. Set goals, but make them reasonable goals.
