Q. Hi Fitz, I'm a woman in my early 40s and have really let myself go over the past decade. I used to have a nice figure, but now I'm stuck with a 'lumpy bumpy butt' that is far too big. The rest of my body needs work too. I joined Weight Watchers two weeks ago, cause I saw that you wrote it was a great program. I'm down three pounds already. So, what do you advise I do to improve my backside. It's awful! Marlene

A. Hello Miss Marlene. I'm glad you sent me your question, and I'm confident I can help. There are a lot of things you can do to tighten up that tush. You've already taken the first step with Weight Watchers -- losing weight will be most important for getting rid of bulging pockets of fat.

The next step you'll want to pursue is shaping your fanny. You didn't mention that you were exercising, so I'm going to assume you're not. Cardiovascular exercise is important for heart and lung health, endurance, and weight loss. It also can be a great tool for contouring muscles. Great cardio options that will both get your heart rate up and require you to work that bum are stair climbing, walking or running at an incline, and lap swimming. Pursue at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise six days a week. Increase this as your fitness level improves.

Strength training should also play a major role in your campaign for a firmer fanny. Various squats, lunges of all kinds, donkey kicks, and prone hamstring curls are your best bets. Begin with one set of each exercise every other day, and then increase both your repetitions and resistance levels as you go forward.

This process will take a while, but if you stick with Weight Watchers and adopt this workout program, you should start to see subtle changes within two weeks. Slowly, the lumps and bumps will disappear, and you can plant that booty of yours in a pair of sexy fitted jeans. I'm rooting for you, Marlene. Now get to work!
