The days are shorter now, so why not take your walking workout indoors?

I don't know what it's like where you live but where I am, it's pretty chilly right now. And, until November 2nd (when Daylight Savings Time ends) the mornings are terribly dark. If you like to walk in the mornings, the season can really put a damper on your workout.

While it's still important to exercise outdoors in the fall and winter (sunlight exposure is important for mood and for obtaining vitamin D), you may want to bring your morning workouts indoors. Try these tips for creating an indoor walking workout:

  • Treadmill. Whether you use a treadmill at the gym or at home, it's a great option for exercise. You can add inclines and pick up the pace at times. And -- bonus! -- you can watch your favorite show while working out.
  • Mall walking. Many malls open early for walkers. It's a great opportunity to window shop while avoiding the crowds. You can also look into joining a mall walking group. Another option is an indoor track -- many gyms and community centers have indoor tracks available for use.
  • Video walking. Try one of Leslie Sansone's videos for a great walking workout.
  • Make your own routine. Do you live in an apartment building or work in a multi-level office? The stairs are ready and waiting for your climb. You can develop a routine of stair climbing and hall walking.
