Snap goes Olympian Misty's achilles on Dancing With The Stars

Practicing the Lindy Hop brought sand volleyball gold medal Olympian Misty May-Treanor to her knees last week on Dancing With The Stars. The diagnosis is a ruptured left achilles tendon -- ouch. This injury is very painful -- I ruptured my right achilles a year ago while coaching girls softball. I swear, all I did was jump skywards cheering our first grade catcher's miracle forceout at home. Riiippp.

Check out the video and witness May-Treanor's injury in real time. Beyond the fact it's disturbing to see this elite athlete sustain such a serious injury, you're probably wondering how she could have ruptured this critical tendon on a simple dance move and not on the volleyball court. While a rupture is most likely to occur in middle-age athletes who have not been training -- hardly May-Treanor -- it happens. I know a woman who ruptured hers running up the stairs. Whatever the reason, strengthening your achilles is a good act to follow. Check out Everything About Achilles Tendons for exercises, stretches and injury prevention tips.

May-Treanor underwent surgery this past Tuesday to repair the tendon and is planning a full comeback. I have no doubt she can return to top form but from personal experience, I know she'll likely need to make accommodations. That's Fit wishes May-Treanor a spectacular recovery and loads of sympathy from her husband.
