How about these healthy tricks and treats?

Categories: Healthy Kids, Nutrition & Supplements

Halloween is always full of thrills and surprises, but that fun shouldn't include health risks. Here are some tips, adapted from the Sierra Club website, for having a happy and healthy October 31st.

Healthy Treats. It's OK to be the person on the block who hands out fruits, organic chocolate, or other healthier options. Nontoxic crayons, coloring books, stickers, and even pocket change can also be great alternatives to sugar- and fat-laden candy.

Eco-Friendly Costumes. Avoid costume jewelry, especially glossy, fake painted pearls and toys from vending machines, which may contain lead. To be sure, use a lead check kit, available at LeadCheck.com. Also, whether going glam or ghoul, use natural makeup to avoid chemical exposure.

Be Creative. Money is tight for just about everyone right now, and that's neither a trick nor a treat. So, instead of shelling out a couple of sawbucks on an elaborate costume, dig into the back of your closet or hit the thrift store to find that crazy shirt or wacky pair of pants you need. Creating costumes is something the whole family can enjoy together.

If Life Gives You Pumpkins. Click here or here for two of about 2,000 pumpkin pie recipes you can find online. If pie isn't your thing, why not turn that old jack-o-lantern into soup or curry? Not a chef? Then be sure to compost that pumpkin once its time has come.
