Curious to know how celebrities squeeze fitness into their daily lives? Want to know the secrets of the stars? Bi-weekly, our That's Fit fitness expert Fitz sits down with the celebs we want to know more about, and digs out their great and not-so-great methods to staying healthy.
My guest this week is a man who's made a career out of crashing and smashing both people and things. What fun! Ron Pitts' first career had him smashing into other large men as an NFL defensive back. This lead him into his second career as a Fox Sports Sportscaster, a job that kept talking about other men crashing into each other. Most recently, he's joined the team at Discovery Channel as host of the thrilling Destroyed in Seconds. As you can imagine, there's lots of crashing, exploding and worse during this exciting show.
Beyond all of this, Ron has pursued fitness for his whole life and after 17 years retired from the NFL, the guy is still pretty buff. He's a working father and husband, though, and struggles just like every other man in this world to squeeze it all in. Read on and learn how you can manage your life and rock your body too.
Fitz: You've been out of the NFL for 17 years but still look like you could step on any field and compete today. How do you do it?
Ron: Thank you, but I don't know Fitz. That's debatable sometimes. My kids think it's cool to play with Dad's "jiggly belly."
Fitz: Well, you still look pretty fantastic to me. What do you do to stay fit?
Ron: My workouts have changed over the years. I struggle with my knees and other joints from all of the years of pounding on them. I do the stepper often and mountain bike a few times each week. I need to stick with the lighter impact stuff.
Fitz: Mountain biking, in particular, is great exercise. How long or far do you go?
Ron: I go with a neighbor buddy of mine, and we spend at least 90 minutes riding.
Fitz: He must think it's cool to train with a former NFL athlete.
Ron: No. In fact, he's always in front of me. We have fun, though. He's cool. I'm also a big dirt bike guy. Motorcross.
Fitz: Really? Is that a good workout?
Ron: Yes! It's really hard on the hands and legs, cause you ride in a squatting position. Plus, your body takes quite a pounding from all the bumps on the track.
Fitz: Do you do push-ups or pull-ups? If so, how many can you do?
Ron: I love them both. I do three sets of 25 push-ups and normally start off my regular lifting routine with about three sets of 12 pull-ups.
Fitz: How are your eating habits?
Ron: I'm actually pretty strict about what I eat. I've never been a junk food guy, although I'd indulge in the occasional greasy burger in college. My dad used to tell me I was the only kid he knew who loved vegetables. I've never been big on ice cream or sweets, and I can't stand chocolate chips.
Fitz: That's a lovely gift to just prefer the healthy stuff.
Ron: I know! I eat a huge breakfast each day, often waffles or pancakes. Then I fill up on lots of chicken, fish, and veggies. I also avoid starchy carbs after 3:00 - 6:00 PM. That allows me to drop weight fast if I want.
Fitz: What's your favorite healthy food?
Ron: I cook chicken on the grill, with a secret marinade. My kids ask for it all the time, and you know it's good if your family asks for it. They don't have an obligation to give me any compliments for free.
Fitz: Favorite not-so-healthy food?
Ron: Baked beans. Give me a little, and I can't control myself. I go crazy for baked beans.
Fitz: How do you like hosting Destroyed in Seconds?
Ron: I love it! First of all, the videos are really unique; not ones most people have seen before. And second, the show delves in to why these catastrophes took place and how people recover from them. I'm shocked by what I see all the time.
Fitz: You also have a very "announcery" voice. It's perfect for television. When you were in the NFL, did you ever imagine your career would veer off this way?
Ron: Thanks, and No. In fact, I was told early on that I would never make it in broadcasting from a vocal standpoint. I also read stories to my kids in various voices, but they get angry and tease me about it.
Fitz: You seem to juggle it all really well. A busy career, lots of time exercising, and special time with your family. What advice do you have for the average Joe or Jane just trying to become more fit?
Ron: First, read labels. I promise you, whatever they say is in the can or box is in there. Be informed and know up front whether or not you want to put those things in your body. Second, avoid heavy starches late in the day. You need carbs for energy early in the day, but eating them late will cause your body to store fat.
Fitz: Thank you so much for the time, Ron. You are the perfect combination of celebrity and regular guy. I'm sure the AOL audience will take away some good advice and reassurance from this interview.
