Your Turn: Do diets work?
Categories: Your Turn
Here at That's Fit, we're constantly telling you what we think about things, but sometimes it's nice to know what you think. So from time to time, we'll ask you a question. Don't be afraid to speak up -- we love feedback. We're always talking diets -- from sensible solutions like the Weight Watchers program to crazy quick fixes like the Lemonade Diet, there are hundreds, if not thousands, out there. But while going on a traditional diet is still accepted as the best method for losing weight, that idea seems to be changing as more and more experts suggest you adopt sensible, sustainable, healthy habits that you enjoy as opposed to cutting out certain foods and begrudgingly dragging yourself to the gym.
To diet or not to diet? This is the question ...

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

Diets no. Changing your diet i.e.; behavior, absolutely. Lost 50 lbs by changing my habits as well as what I ate. Exercise and rest are crucial. At the age of 50, I am in better shape than when I was 30. The basics are still the answer. Forget the fads.

Diets rarely work (unfortunately). Even more comprehensive weight loss programs rarely have long-term effect. Here's a video, which may provide some explanation on why people tend to overeat: http://www.wellnessaid.com/health-practices/nutrition/video-why-overeaters-continue-to-over-eat/

the most effective way to lose weight is a healthy lifestyle. Diets imply that you will return to your ways when you are done with the diet.

I do not diet. I joined the Food Addicts Organization (foodaddicts.org) and took off 200 pounds. The food addicts organization helped me get to the root of why I ate and now I no longer easier drawn to food to help me get through a crisis. In this organization, there are many examples of people who have taken off hundreds of pounds and have kept all the weight off for several years. I recommend that program over any other weight lost program that I have tried.

I agree with all the comments already posted. It is not a matter of jumping on the latest diet craze that works for some, but a change in lifestyle that will last forever. Put down the cheeseburger and pick up a grilled chicken sandwich was a starter for me. Dropping soft drinks completely and drinking more water was the other. I started my lifestyle change about two years and 40 lbs ago. Now the thought of eating fast food every day almost makes me sick
