How Many Calories ... in popcorn without butter?
Categories: How Many Calories?
What's on your top 10 list of I know I shouldn't have it but I want it so badly foods? For me, movie popcorn ranks pretty highly on the roster. It's difficult to go to a show without getting a big bag of salty goodness, the more buttery the better. It's expensive and it probably has a million calories, but once I smell that popcorn smell, I feel like I have to have it, sometimes even when I'm not hungry.
But we know that kind of buttery indulgence is going to cost us in the calories department -- well, if we get butter anyway. Popcorn itself is considered a whole grain, and whole grains are good, right? So, theoretically, if we don't pile on the calories by adding butter, we should be ok. Right?
The answer is 951 calories and 58 g of fat according to Calorie King! Without added butter! For the love of pete!
It goes without saying that consuming nearly 1000 calories as a snack is not a good idea unless you work out all the time. Healthier options? I don't think there are any. Licorice is fat free and relatively low in calories (in moderation) but it's no match for a popcorn craving. A small popcorn without butter has 573 calories -- still more than a Big Mac. You could bring in your own air-popped popcorn but bringing in your own snacks is generally frowned upon.
Of course, if you feel you can't live without a bucket of buttery movie popcorn, you could throw caution to the wind and just give in, but make sure this is a rare occurrence -- like once a year. If, like me, you can't go to the movies without visiting the concession stand? Stick to renting your movies.
