Need a fantastic fruit fix? Pick a perfect plum

We talk bunches about fruits here at That's Fit, but there's one fruit I've decided doesn't get enough attention. It happens to be something I don't pick up much at the grocery store either: It's the plum. A relative of the peach, nectarine, and almond, the sweet plum is a stone fruit that comes in a panorama of colors. When dried, it becomes a fruit by a whole new name -- prune -- and it just happens to be in season at this very moment.

May through October marks the season for the mighty plum, and what follows are a few reasons you should be picking up this fruit before October runs out.

  • Pick a plum for your daily vitamins C, A, and B2.
  • Plums pack potassium.
  • You need fiber, and plums have fiber.
  • Antoxidants? Plums have them.
  • Carrots might work but plums are better for the eyes.

Plums are perfect, for just about everyone. One word of caution, though, from the good folks at WHFoods: Plums are among a small number of foods that contain measurable amounts of oxalates, naturally-occurring substances found in plants, animals, and human beings. When oxalates become too concentrated in body fluids, they can crystallize and cause health problems. For this reason, individuals with already existing and untreated kidney or gallbladder problems may want to avoid eating plums.
