Purple it up babe. Yup. Drink it up. Eat it up. And you may just be thinner, look younger, get healthier and live longer than "non-purple eaters." Is it important to ramp up these foods in your diet? You bet! Read on for some pretty cool reasons you need to include more fruits, veggies, herbs and even flowers rich in anthocyanins in your daily diet:

  • Foods containing these natural red, purple, pink and blue pigments have been found to be powerful in fighting free radicals in the body. What do free radicals do? Cause disease, increase the aging process and cause a myriad of health problems. Foods with purple power are known "super foods!"
  • Anthocyanins are involved in neurogenesis and have been found to enhance neuronal signaling capabilities and improve communication among neurons. Blueberries are known to enhance memory function. The blue pigments protect the brain and help neurons!
  • The purple pigments have been found to prevent fat cells from getting fatter, lowers insulin resistance and might even curb your appetite! All the more reason not to pick that red cabbage out of your salad! Read more about it here.
  • Do you know why cranberries are so effective in fighting bladder infections? Those fabulous red pigments, also members of the anthocyanin family, prevent bacteria from grabbing onto the sensitive tissue lining the bladder and female urinary tract. Berry pigments are especially good at neutralizing many different types of bacteria responsible for pesky U.T.I.s!
  • Red wines are rich in "good for your heart" pigments. Super for lowering LDL's or bad cholesterol that may lead to cardiovascular disease, some prefer grape juice to obtain the same benefit. I for one recommend limiting your consumption of high sugar juices to no more than three to four ounces per serving/per day.
  • Try purple potatoes instead of white. Switch to purple basil instead of green. And blood oranges versus traditional oranges. And all sorts of berries including black raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and even goji berries are all super potent purple pigment foods!

I also love this article on foods with purple power! Check it out! So this week, "Turn On" the purple ... and red, pink and blue in your daily diet. Making these pigments a priority may help you in more ways than you could ever imagined!
