Justin Timberlake hits the links

Justin Timberlake is featured on the cover of a magazine, but it's not the celebrity-type magazine you'd expect. Instead, Timberlake is on the cover of Golf Digest.

Timberlake took up golf about six years ago when he played in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. Since then, the singer and actor has become quite involved. He purchased a course in his hometown of Memphis to prevent it being turned into a housing development. More recently, he's hosting a PGA-tour event (debuting in October) called the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Timberlake admits he doesn't spend as much time on the links as he would like. How about you? Are you taking advantage of fall's beautiful weather and going golfing? Believe it or not, it can be a healthful way to spend an afternoon.

Golf is certainly not as physically demanding as a workout at the gym or a run around your neigborhood, but the activity can promote health if you do it right.

Most leisure golfers don't do it for health. They rent a cart, drink plenty of alcoholic beverages, and stop at the clubhouse for a burger afterward. With some minor adjustments, however, golfing can promote health.
  • Ditch the cart and carry your clubs. Distances vary from course to course, but playing 18-holes can tally up to 5-7 miles of walking.
  • Drink water. Don't purchase refreshments at the course. Bring along a water bottle to keep you hydrated.
  • Practice makes perfect. When you don't have time for the golf course, visit a driving range or try some exercises to improve your swing.
  • Eat healthfully. Part of the fun in golf is getting together with your friends. For many, that includes lunch or dinner after a round of golf. If the club doesn't have any healthful options, suggest visiting a nearby restaurant instead and order wisely.
  • Relax! Golf is a great way to relax and release some stress.
