I prefer restaurants that allow better eating to begin with.
For example, I avoid Italian restaurants completely. Pasta marinara has a lot of salt and processed carbs, and those calories are mostly empty with very little nutrition to show for the caloric price. Basically, pasta marinara is just a meatless, cheese-less pizza. I think the Italian food found in America is a very good reason why American stereotypes portray Italians as being very fat. In general, I tend to just avoid places where menus are based on putting sauces on carbs. This includes Italian, Indian, Thai, Chinese, etc. Of course, it helps that they just don't taste that good to me.
I like American seafood restaurants, but I avoid Asian seafood restaurants because they insist on covering all the seafood in strange goo concoctions. I also like sushi restaurants, especially ones that have sashimi salad on the menu (an assortment of lettuce and other veggies topped with raw fish -- just have them put any sauces/dressings on the side, partly to prevent them from covering up the taste of yummy fish).
My favorite type of restaurant is Mongolian BBQ. If people are eating out at the same place repeated, I think Mongolian BBQs are probably the best restaurants for it. You pick from a wide range of raw meats and veggies, and they cook it for you. Just use the steamed brown rice instead of processed carbs such as noodles and breads, and skip the ice cream and overly salty or oily sauces. Lots of people seem to spend most of their time in the sauce section, but I just go straight to the ginger water and/or garlic water. (Yum!)
