Q. Hi Fitz, I'm a lady who is happily turning 51 next week and am finally ready to get into shape. It seems like I went from a skinny-as-a-rail teen to a weighty 180 pound middle-ager. There are so many weight-loss programs, tips, recipes out there, and it gets quite confusing. I don't like to exercise per se, but I love to garden, wash the car, play kickball, and dance. For both weight-loss and aging concerns, I know there are some diet changes I need to make as well. For instance, I've had to cut out 2% milk and switch to 1% because the higher-fat just didn't agree with me anymore. But what's the next step? High fiber, low-fat, no carbs, or carbs for daylight hours only? I missed the point when my body was supposed to be racked, stacked and packed! I'm now hoping it's not too late to achieve that at this stage in my life. Can you help? Atia

A. Hello Atia! I love your question. Glad to hear that after 50 years you're ready to make a grand effort towards a fitter, stronger, and with no shyness ... a hotter looking body! Of course it's not too late; it never is. I also agree with you that the information put out about fitness is far too confusing. Being an "expert" in the field, it's nice that people give me credit for being somewhat brilliant about it. I'll let you in on a little secret though (promise not to tell a soul?): All my years of education and experience have taught me this: Fitness is ridiculously simple.

Of course there are tricks and methods to motivating yourself and staying on task, but here's the gist of what you need to know.

When it comes to food, stick with lots of produce, lean protein, lean dairy, whole grains, calorie free beverages and a little bit of healthy fat. If you base 90% of your meals and snacks around those things, it won't matter if you indulge a bit here and there. Do not consume more calories than you can burn off. A woman your size would lose weight at a slow, but steady pace on a budget of about 1500-1600 calories per day.

Exercise often! Unfortunately, you won't be able to create a totally bangin' body by washing the car, though. Let's get ambitious! Some of my coolest personal training clients are men and women in their 60s who kickbox, jog, and engage in heavy weight-lifting. They're improving with age and doing things they've never done before. I recommend you get with a professional instructor and take your love of dancing to the next level! What if you joined a soccer team for adults? Keep your workouts vigorous and focus on these four areas of fitness: cardiovascular, strength, flexibility and balance.

Atia, that hot body you're yearning for is completely within your reach. You just have to work for it! Cut unnecessary fat and calories where you can and the extra pounds you're carrying around will disappear. Exercise most days a week at a pace that is truly challenging to you and the shape of your body will eventually grow "racked and stacked." I've seen amazing transformations from folks of all ages. Please send me your "after" photos once you earn them. Now get to work!

Punches & Kicks,

Fitz
