Children's Nutrition: Advice from experts

Posted on Sep 19th 2008 11:17PM by Martha Edwards

What are you supposed to do if your kid won't eat his or her veggies? Over at Well, The New York Times' health blog, they're talking nutrition with two leading experts, Dr. T. Berry Brazelton and Dr. Joshua Sparrow. Their recommendation? If your child won't eat vegetables, don't worry about it.

I know what you're thinking ... WHAT?!?!

Dr. Brazelton explains, "When a young child struggles with you over food, you won't win. The more you struggle, the more he'll hate whatever you're trying to shovel into him. Back off. Apologize." Instead, he says, it's more important to help your child build a healthy relationship with food, and forcing him or her to eat them won't help. Give young children a multivitamin. Over time, you can try sneaking veggies into your child's food and begin slowly introducing small bits of healthy stuff, but don't make a big deal of it. Create a positive vibe around meal times and don't focus on the food.

But this isn't a green light to feed your child junk. They can -- and will -- become addicted to the taste of over-processed junk. If you want them to develop a taste for healthy stuff, it's best to make healthy stuff the norm.

I think Dr. Brazelton makes a very good point. Your thoughts?
