Curious to know how celebrities squeeze fitness into their daily lives? Want to know the secrets of the stars? Bi-weekly, our That's Fit fitness expert Fitz sits down with the celebs we want to know more about, and digs out their great and not-so-great methods to staying healthy.
Travis McGriff is an elite athlete who broke records as a wide receiver at the University of Florida and then went on to play football in the NFL for both the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons. He's trained with the best coaches and trainers one could wish for and has maintained his level of fitness since retiring from football several years ago. In fact, he says he's still "game ready." Fitness is, and always will be, part of his life. He has a bunch of neat NFL stories to share, and some fantastic suggestions to get you in great shape too.
Fitz: What is training like in the NFL?
Travis: It's a lot different than one would think! In the off-season, for example, players are basically left to do their own thing. The few programs offered are OK, but not the killer workouts one would imagine. And! In the fall, the training is nill. We were basically just playing ball.
Fitz: That is weird! Most people would expect pro football players to be challenged year round.
Travis: During off-season training, we ran four times a week and lifted four times a week. What was unique, though, was the way we trained. Most people in a gym get on a treadmill or stepper and just go. Athletes do sports specific training: sprints, change of direction drills, etc... My training routines varied based on the team strength and conditioning coaches as well. My S&C coach with the Atlanta Falcons had me doing Olympic style lifts like the "clean and jerk," while my coach for the Denver Broncos preferred basic strength training techniques like the bench press.
Fitz: What do you think is the difference between NFL athletes and their amazingly athletic bodies, versus the average Joe who hits the gym often?
Travis: Honestly? Genetics! Not that these guys don't work incredibly hard, but they're also naturally big, quick and strong. Then they're given the edge of unique training techniques and exposure to experts most people would not have access to. Professional athletes need it, though, cause they are competing at such a high level. The NFL is big business!
Fitz: It's amazing how fit most people would be if their careers relied for it.
Travis: Exactly! And what's funny is that in the NFL, guys don't care about what they look like; they just want to perform better. The average Joe just wants to "be in shape."
Fitz: What kind of emphasis was there on nutrition?
Travis: Actually, you'd be shocked by the lack of focus on nutrition in pro football. In fact, I'd say there was no attention to it at all
Fitz: Really?
Travis: The only folks who seemed to pursue very healthy eating were the older athletes trying to preserve their longevity .
Fitz: Eating well is kind of the secret to that, you know.
Travis: I learned how important it was in a horrible way. I had a hideous virus that hospitalized me right after I was drafted in the third round by the Denver Broncos. I was supposed to be excited, but I was so sick I didn't/couldn't even care. I'm 5'9" and traditionally weigh about 175. I lost 25 pounds in the hospital and once I was released had to go perform at mini camps to keep my spot on the team.
Fitz: Sounds hideous.
Travis: It was. Knowing that making the team was no guarantee, I knew I needed to focus on nutrition. I tell you, I was eating like Popeye. Chugging spinach, and downing healthy meals five times a day. It worked!
Fitz: How do you eat now?
Travis: I stick with natural foods. I feel like, if it grew out of the ground or is an animal not shot up with all sorts of drugs ... my body's probably going to know what to do with it.
Fitz: What about your fitness level has changed since you left the NFL?
Travis: Not much! I have other things to focus on now, like my business and child, but I'm still game ready. I'm committed to training and eat really well.
Fitz: What's your favorite healthy food?
Travis: I'm a nut for salmon lately.
Fitz: What's your favorite not-so-healthy food?
Travis: Beyer's Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream and pizza.
Fitz: How many pull-ups can you do?
Travis: In a row? Twenty five or thirty.
Fitz: Do you do push-ups?
Travis: No. But I do dips. I can do about 50 in my first set.
Fitz: Do you have a favorite player?
Travis: Jerry Rice is the gold standard for wide receivers. His did all the right things when it came to training, nutrition and hard work. He's definitely the role model.
Fitz: Have a favorite coach?
Travis: Steve Spurrier from my years at the University of Florida.
Fitz: What advice do you have for the average Joe or Jane just trying to be more fit and look better naked?
Travis: Find a workout or nutrition plan that makes sense to you. There are a bunch of ways to skin that cat, you just have to be consistent with your efforts. Too many people give up before they really get the ball rolling. If you stick with things until you get into a groove, your success will steamroll. Just don't quit before you get to that point!
Fitz: What are you up to now?
Travis: I own a restoration company PuroClean Disaster Fire Response I also host an annual football camp for high school wide receivers from around the country called McGriff Select. We teach NFL style football; nuances the athletes would never learn in high school or probably even college. It's so much fun.
Fitz: Thank you so much for spending this time with me Travis. I love the inside scoop on the NFL, and of course, I always loved watching you score touchdown after touchdown for our Alma mater, the Florida Gators. Will send my son to McGriff Select in about 12 years!
