3 diet tweaks that take 10 minutes
Categories: Nutrition & Supplements
Got 10 minutes? That's all you need to change your diet for the better, says Dr. Katz in this Oprah magazine article.
The way Dr. Katz sees it, there are two ways you can improve the quality of what you eat: You can study nutrition theory, abandon everything you're doing wrong, and retool your diet from the ground up. Or you can make one small, 10-minute change at a time. Try these few tweaks.
- Eat breakfast. This 10-minute investment can translate into a healthy weight.
- Eat whole-grain cereal. Use your 10 minutes here to find one with five grams of fiber per serving. Add skim milk and fruit and you're set.
- Avoid pre-packaged dinners. Putting together a home-cooked dinner takes only about 10 minutes more of hands-on time than using mainly prepackaged dishes.
Gosh, there's so much more you could do in just 10 minutes to fine-tune your diet. I'm thinking skip the cookie aisle at the grocery store -- seconds is all that takes -- and clean out just one shelf in your pantry of junk foods. How about you -- tell us about your tricks and tweaks.

Spend time in the produce aisle - fresh is always better than canned!
Read food labels, and pick the one which has a good balance of calories, fiber, and fat. And make sure you can actually pronounce everything on the label.
Keep your refrigerator bare. If something's in there more than a week, throw it out. It takes 10 minutes to weed through the fridge!
Find a healthy cook book and take 10 minutes to flip through it and find healthy-yummy-easy recipes! Better yet, go online. There are many websites dedicated to sharing recipes. My favorite is http://www.allrecipes.com while my sister prefers http://www.cooks.com .
