If your dad is short and overweight, your mom is short and overweight, you'll be short and overweight, too, right? Not necessarily.

card with different body typesGenetics do play a role in your body type. Just like genetics determine your height, they also control your body shape and -- to a certain extent -- can predispose you to being overweight. There are three different body types:
  • Ectomorphs are tall and slim.
  • Mesomorphs are muscular and compact.
  • Endomorphs are round with short limbs.
Your genetic body type contributes to about 30%-50% of your weight. But the rest is up to you. Your lifestyle -- including exercise and eating habits -- contributes the most to your weight. So, while you have to settle for whatever height your genetic makeup gives you, your weight is largely under your control.
